PAGE I4 TERRACE BAY NEWS JUNE 26, 1974 ART CLUB SHOW The annual show of the Schreiber Art Club was again a most successful event, with 500 visitors coming to see and admire the 300 paintings. : Terrace Bay Club was invited to show some of their work, this year, and from the increas -ing attendance, Schreiber would seem a natur- al centre for a district show. ~ A natural honour since there have been painters in the town since the first residents arrived, and, in many cases it is obvious the talent has been handed down through three gen- erations. Too much credit cannot be given Helen Stric -kland, their instructor for the success of the Schreiber Club, because of her genuine in- terest and the enthusiasm which has resulted in groups where age creates no barrier - mem- bers ranging from teenagers to grandparents, all working happily together. The Schreiber Club is sponsored by Confeder -ation College and Jim McDonald, Supervisor of Community Programs, Continuing Education Div- ision, paying an official visit to the Show, was frankly astonished at the talent he found, saying THIS is what Continuing Education Is, and how gratifying to see it in action. If it were possible, he added, he's be interested in taking a number of the paintings for a show in Thunder Bay. Included in the exhibit were collage, mono-. chromatics, portraitures, abstracts of form and lines, three dimensional paintings of buil -dings, =realistic and abstract buildings with over-lapping forms, landscapes, sea- scapes, palette knife, and, a few acryilics. The Show was held on Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday afternoon with members wel- coming the visitors and serving tea and small cakes. : Gifts were presented to Helen Strickland, Alice Sparkes and Shirley Brown, the retiring president. The door prize, a portrait in oils by Alice Sparkes, was won by Mrs. Rosa Speck. Visitors came from Toronto, Sault Ste. Mar- ie, Manitouwadge, Marathon, Terrace Bay, Ger- aldton and Thunder Bay, the numbers indicating the growing interest in the Club's annual Show. The Schreiber Art Club has elected its off- icers for the coming year, with Rose Pyke as president; Shirley Brown, first vice president, Simonne Bourgeois, second vice president, Col- leen Glad, third vice president, Alice Sparkes _secretary, Iris Lidkea, treasurer, Diane Lap- Classes will resume in September, with Helen Strickland of Thunder Bay, as the in- structor, the Club sponsored by Confederation College. In the intervals between Mrs. Strickland's classes, Alice Sparkes and Coll- een Glad will assist the members who meet weekly. There were 45 members last year and all in -dications are an increase in membership in the Fall. : During the summer recess the painters, in small groups, go on outings in the immediate area, on sketching parties for material which they will work up in the winter.
