CANCER SOCIETY CANVASS SUCCESSFUL The Schreiber Cancer committee is deeply gratified with the response to the canvass this year, the sum of $I186.00 being collected. And they feel, the surprising increase in the contribution, is in the great part, due to their having enlisted men in the canvassing, fox the first time. Mrs. Margaret Godin was the campaign chair- man, assisted by Mrs. Winnie Campbell, the pre- sident. The Captains were Mesdames Mary Kaczmierczak, Norah McGuire, Beth Macadam, Dorothy Rummery and Annie Niemi with Bill Kushnieryk collecting at Walker Lake and Mrs. Edith Ibey collecting in Rossport, where contributions were notice- ably increased. Contributions may always be made during the year to Mrs. Macadam or any of the above-ment- ioned officers. SCHREIBER WOMEN'S INSTITUTE MEETING Roll call at the Schreiber Women's Institute meeting on May I4th was answered by naming dif- ferent ways of pollution by air, land and water the motto 'for the meeting being "We must fight pollution to save mankind." Mrs. Joe Campbell read an interesting paper on the prevention of pollution by re-cycling, controls by both individuals and government. The coming federal election and its high spending legislation was a topic of lively dis- cussion in current events. Other subjects dis- cussed were the new highway signs, scheduled to be changed to metrics by September 1977, the héavy flooding of prairie towns and wheat fields and the pending immigration into Canada of nine thousand Chinese. Correspondence read by Mrs. Winnie Clemens included an invitation to attend a free food forum in Trinity United church, Thunder Bay, on May. 30th, and the annual Institute Fall Rally also in Thunder Bay on October I7, with members asked to hand in colored snaps of local scenes which will be mounted and intered in competi- tion at the Rally. Notes of appreciation from the Public Libr- ary for the collection of books recently don- ated, from the Dystrophy Association for a don- ation, and from the Cancer Committee for gifts for Amethyst House, Thunder Bay. ! There was also an invitation to attend the formal opening of Birchwood Terrace Home in Terrace Bay on May 3Ist at 2 p.m. and members were reminded of the tea during the afternoon on May 25th marking the formal opening of the Chimo Club in Schreiber. Plans were finalized for the monster penny auction on May 3Ist in the town hall, with a door prize and draw for grocery prize. It was agreed to again present scholarships to grade 8 students in both local schools. Due to so many forthcoming events members decided to postpone their proposed bus trip until the Pall. The baby scales, loaned for so many years to young mothers will now be sold for five dollars to anyone interested and despite their years of use they are still in good condition. The executive wily meet on May 28th to plan the programs for the coming year. Mrs. Todesco, who presided for the meeting read a Mother's Day poem and an article en- titled "For Home And Country" - the W.I. mot- to. It described the formation of the Insti- tute in I897 at Stoney Creek, by Mrs. Adel- aide Hoodless, assisted by Erland Lee and his wife. Today there are I290 branches and 30,775 members in Ontario. The minutes of the April meeting and treasurer's report were adopted as read by Mrs. Clemens and Mrs. Chris Morris. Following the meeting lunch was served by Mrs. Clemens, Mrs. Todesco and Mrs. Jack Stokes. ALTAR SOCIETY MEETING Mrs. Herb Legault hosted the Altar Society for its May meeting. Plans were finalized for a cash and miscellaneous bingo for May 28th. The financial statement and minutes were adopted as read. Candles are to be or- dered for the altar and arrangements made to obtain flower plants for the grotto and bord- er. It was noted that the water and hose are to be hooked up for the summer and custodians hired for the church and grounds care. Mrs. E. Gerow presided and led in prayers. Lunch was served and a social hour enjoyed. Miss Maxine Hubelit spent the holiday week -end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. Hub- elit. Guests with Mrs. Todesco on the holi- day weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Chapman and family of Winnipeg enroute to Espanola and Toronto.
