The government here in Ontario believes that no one should ever be deprived of a higher education simply for lack of money. And, we're doing something about it... through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). OSAP consists of government- financed loans and grants designed to help qualified Canadian citizens and landed immigrants pay for their higher education. And they are based on need, not on academic achievement. The loans are interest-free until 6 months after graduation, and repay- ments don't begin until then. The grants don't normally have to be repaid at all. Already, 2 out of 5 students at Ontario universities and community colleges receive some form of financial assistance from OSAP.
