At this writing the Flyers and New York are tied 2-2 and the Bruins lead Chicago 3-2 in semi-final play. : As you might imagine, I lost a small fortune when Montreal was eliminated by the Rangers == all I won last year and then some. But I've since managed to get some good bets (with odds). that Philadelphia will win the Cup. Now if the Flyers can stop getting those stup- id penalties and start playing the hockey they- 're capable of, they should knock off the Rang- ers and it should be quite a series against the Bruins. What troubles me, though, is that the Fly- ers lost the services of their best defenceman, Rangers. Ashbee, probably the steadiest play- er on the team and in my mind deserving of all- star recognition, stopped a shot with his face that required I5 stitches. That knocked him = 3 out for the remainder of the New York series and probably the finals, if the Flyers get . that far without him. ; I'11 either get back some of that money I : lost on the Habs, or end up in the poor house. 4 Haven't anything to say about the Montreal- New York series. I must admit I pouted for several days after the Rangers ousted my Habs, but what the heck, the Canadiens were outcoach- ed, that's all there was to it. What really cheesed me off, though, is that sam Pollock announced after the series that Scotty Bowman would be back as coach next seas- on. I can't see that.' Bunny Larocque played a fine series in goal for the Canadiens, but I can't understand why Bowman didn't use Wayne Thomas, the better of Canadiens three netminders. Oh well, that's all water under the bridge now. So, C'MON PHILADELPHIA Jy SPORTS SHORTS: Gordie Howe, who had a great season in leading Houston Aeros to the west 1 division crown in the World Hockey Association, says he'll be back to play another season with = the Aeros. Although he signed a five-year con- tract with the Texas hockey club, Gordie was 1 not obliged to play more than one season. He set a goal of 70 points this season and wound continued page 8 «.ccevcene
