It was agreed to authorize the executive to conduct normal business, bringing a report to each general meeting, in an effort to shor- ten the time of the general meetings. Cyril Sparkes was elected treasurer - re- placing Iris Lidkea who has resigned. Ida Krause reported the social evenings in aid of the club were being generously support- ed and that Inez McKevitt had donated an afghan to be raffled. Harry Costall, building committee chairman, reported progress on the renovations, but add- ed the removal of the Bank's safe still poses a problem, and, he's having difficulty in contacting workers interested in other repairs required. Kay Verdone reported there are now I43 mem- bers in the club. Hearty rounds of applause were given to Alex Gordon, who had driven many members with- out cars, to the dinner, and, to the Anglican Church Women who catered for it. The Commisso orchestra played following the dinner. for dancing, of the security given by the fire fighters. Schreiber has a grim history of fires: Jan. 28th on the front Street the Queen's Hotel, 'the McCuaig block, the Beamish Store, a tailor shop, candy shop and a dwelling were destroy- ed; In I9IT the King Edward Hotel on the west side of the town went down; In I9I9 the rink burned; in I9I7 the C.P.R. station; in the I920's the C.P.R. Boarding House and the Webb Block; in I924 Message's Store, the McCuaig Block and part of the Bank of Montreal; in I957 Birchwood Motors, with apartments above it, and in I962 the Mayfair Hotel burn- ed, with no account of the private dwellings which also were destroyed by fire. From the first fire protection, a hand drawn reel of hose, to the modern equipment used by an alert and constantly studying group of members paid a very nominal fee, now headed by Chief, Peter Doig, now belong and take an active interest in the Thunder Bay Mutual Fire Aid Association. Masked contestants come from far-away to attend this particular dance in Schreiber. FIREMEN'S BALL The Schreiber Fire Brigade are holding the- ir annual masquerade ball on October 26th, a cabaret dance, in the high school, beginning at 9 p.m. with costume judging shortly after midnight. There will also be the generous cash door prize. This is one community event to which every- ore contributes whether they attend the fest- ivities or not, in grateful acknowledgement REBEKAH'S DONATE CRIB The donation of a crib for the Children's Ward of McCausland Hospital, Terrace Bay, was finalized at the Ruby Rebekah meeting in Schreiber on September 26th, with Mrs. Glorie Miller N.G. and Mrs. Lil Harris, V.G. presid- ing. Mrs. Lillie Legault of Montreal was welcom- ed as a visitor. Mrs. Bernice Whent presented the semi-annu- al report of the property committee. Mrs. Helen Wallace, P.D.D.P. and Mrs. Mavis Slater, P.P. Rebekah Assembly of Ontario, it was announced, will be in Huntsville, Ontario on October I2th to receive the Degree of Chivalry at a special ceremony, when other members will also receive special recognition continued page I5 ......
