SPORTS SLANTS - By Ray Shank Records show that the honeymoon between the ball club in an expansion city and the fans that support that club lasts five years. In other words, if the club isn't a contender by the end of the fifth year, fan support begins to dwindle. This is the fifth year in major league base- b ball for Montreal Expos and, would you believe it, they're busting their britches to show their partisan Montreal fans that they are very: | much that -- contenders! After a slow start and some terrible weather in the spring, attendance was down by close to I00,000 for the same period in I972. Right now, they're about even in attendance with last | season -- they surpassed the million mark for the fifth consecutive year last week -- and the Expos' won-lost record shows they're ahead of last year's pace. The National League's eastern division race, at the moment, could be described as a league president's dream. It's the kind of a race they like to predict before the start of the season and which so seldom materializes. This time, though, it's for real. As of last Tuesday, all six teams in the league were definite contenders for the championship. St. Louis Cardinals had a slim half-game lead over Pittsburgh Pirates, the Expos were a mere Ik games behind the Cards, then came the New York Mets (who have been in the cellar most of the season), Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phill-. ies, in that order. continued page II ....
