PAGE IO TERRACE BAY NEWS SEPTEMBER 6,I973 Sports Slants -- continued ......: . St. Louis Cardinals, leaders of the National League's east division in baseball were invol- ved in a similar playoff setup, they'd be lucky to be in the playoffs. The Cards lead their division, but there are nine other teams in the majors who have better records. Cardinals, who had a two-game lead on Pittsburgh Pirates as of last Tuesday, were the only team in that division with a better than .500 record. They were 66-64 for a mediocre .508 mark. Four of the six teams i in the NL west division were over .500, just two in the American League west and four teams in the AL east. An example of how poor that National League east has been ... Montreal Expos, who are sti- 11 definite threats for the NL east division playoff spot -- they were 4% games behind the Cardinals as of last Tuesday -- would have ranked I7th among the 24 teams in the two maj- or leagues. Would be nice to see the Expos win that NL eastern crown, but wouldn't bet much more than 1 a plugged nickel in the playoffs !!! LAKE SUPERIOR HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY The.
