There have been some big money winners at Windsor Raceway recently, but don't think the horse bettors are the only winners. The track isn't exactly suffering. Recently they had their first Million-Dollar Day at the Raceway. Bettors laid out $40I,438 during the Saturday afternoon card, then bet another $605,283 into the mutuels at the evening races. And on that same day, two men, one from Detroit and the other from Windsor, went home $32,23I.50 rich- er for their $2 investment in the matinee quadactor event. SCHREIBER-TERRACE BAY SEARCH & RESCUE UNIT Directors meeting was held on Feb. 28th in the Schreiber Fire Hall. At this meeting it was decided that the Area Commanders meet with their Patrol Leaders to pass on information regarding training programmes and to cover specific points in order to lessen future problems. Membership forms are slow in getting back please get them returned as it is holding up> training. Anyone interested in becoming associated with the unit can still do so by contacting any Patrol Leader, L. Duquette in Terrace Bay or W. Kushnieryk in Schreiber. The incorporating of our unit is in the hands of Dubinsky, Kanavichak, Ferris, Ross and Dube - a legal firm in Thunder Bay. Some misunderstanding has risen regarding the use of privately owned equipment by our unit. We have no intention of using such equipment without the owner's conscent at any time. It was also suggested that owners check their insurance coverage if they have any doubts about damage reimbersements. The unit reguests that by adding to the form "Owner Operated", will specify that the owner will operate at all times when it is used by Search and Rescue. The Search and Rescue would be very inter- ested in having some residents of Rossport participating in our Unit. Application for 1972 Road Maintenance and construction subsidy was authorized for sub- mission to the Department of Transportation and Communication. The 1973 Road Maintenance and construction program in the amount of 28,000 is to be submitted to the Department of Transpor- tation and Communication. j A resolution was passed authorizing a 9 mill tax levy, payable by March 30th. A resolution was passed that R. Cornfield be appointed a Municiapl Utility Man, effective May 1st, 1973. NORTHERN AFFAIRS OFFICE The Northern Affairs Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources completed on December 31, 1972 its second full year of operation. Since the inception of Northern Affairs in August 1970 the officers of Northern Affairs have answered a total of 154,386 transactions. The Marathon office has been most active ans- wering a total of 4,055. In addition to being the only official agency designated to dis- pense information on provincial programmes, the officers of Northern Affairs are authorized to act as official representatives for the Employment Standards Branch of the Ministry of Labour, Act as investigators. Through the Northern Affairs and their sate- llite system it has been estimated that one out of ten persons residing north of the Frenct River have used the services of Northern Af- - fairs. ~ The Northern Affairs service is free and all inquiries are treated in strict confidence. In Marathon the Northern Affairs office is centrally located in the Peninsula Building and is open Monday to Friday between 8:15 am and 4:30 pm. Members of the Knitting Club to which Mrs. Mabel Storey has belonged for a number of year: met at the home of Mrs. Mildred Welsh on Thurs: day evening. It was the occasion of Mrs. Storey's 81st birthday and also a farewell par- ty for her, since she is leaving on March 20th to take up residence in Beamsville, Ont. Mrs. Storey's friends presented her with a white summer purse and all their best wishes.
