SPORTS SLANTS - By Ray Shank The firing of Tom Johnson as coach of Boston Bruins Feb. 5 really didn't come as a surprise. At the time, the Big Bad Bruins were in their worst tailspin in a couple or three years and writers wouldn't have been out of line by referring to them as Playful Cubs. Johnson's dismissal came just one day after the Bostonians had managed only one point in a couple of weekend games against New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers. They lost 7-3 to the Rangers and could only get a 2-2 tie with Philadelphia. But the beginning of the end for Johnson was probably the night of Jan. 18. That was the night the Beantown- ers suffered a 9-7 setback at the hands of the lowly New York Islanders right there in Boston Gardens. It was only the Islanders' fifth win of the season and that loss by the Bruins showed definite symptons that some- thing was wrong. Following that humiliating defeat to the worst club in either division, Bruins managed only three wins in ten starts. They won three, but one was "a 6-5 cliffhanger against Los Angeles and the other two were against two other lowly clubs, California Golden Seals and Toronto Maple Leafs. There was definitely something lacking. But Johnson is not really at fault for the Bruins' sudden downfall. I blame prima-donnes like Phil Esposito . and Bobby Orr for what happened. Sure, Esposito and Orr are probably two of the game's greatest performers. But let's face it, they - especially Espo - have let their success go to their heads and feel that they're Messieurs Know-it-all and probably felt they were TOO super to have to take ad- vice from an ex-Montreal and Boston defenceman who never reached such great heights as either Esposito or Orr. In my mind, I don't think Esposito and Orr gave a hoot about Johnson's tutoring. Unfortunately, since they are such great stars, their ways of thinking probably rubbed off on the other lesser lights of the Boston club. One thing about Johnson's firing. You noticed it was Harry Sinden who |did the firing and made the announce- ment that Bep Guidolin would be taking over the coaching reins. Which proves that the boss man, right now, in the Bruin organization, is Harry Sinden. Not Milt Schmidt. Harry Sinden! Weston Adams, the chair- man of the board, appears to have releived Schmidt of some of his front office power and Sinden is now THE man. It wouldn't surprise me to see Schmidt leave the club before the end of the season, or at least when the season is over. Sinden has done well for himself since coaching Team Canada to a victory over the Russians. But you have to hand it to him, he knows how to crack the whip when he has to. Of course he's in a much better position than he was after I970, when he led the Bruins to the Stanley Cup as coach, then resigned because of battles with Adams and Schmidt. Harry knows that the only other sol- ution to perking up the Bruins would have been to fire half the team. But he couldn't do that, of course. So he hired a guy who might be able to command a bit more respect than Johnson, a nice guy. Nice guys finish last, you know, so Bep Guidolin, who once played for the Bruins and for the last couple of years has been coaching Boston's affiliate club in the AHL, was installed as coach. cont'd page 20......
