BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING With all Trustees, The Director of Education, Supervising Principal and Chief Accountant present, The Lake Superior Board of Education held their first meeting of I973 in Manitouwadge on January I3th. The Director of Education call for nominations for the office of Chair- man for the year 1973. The following were nominated: Trustee E. Autio, Trustee A.S. Gordon and Trustee R.P. Ungar. Upon balloting, Trustee A.S. Gordon was elected as Chairman for I973. Trustee Gordon assumed the chair and called for nominations for the pos- ition of Five-Chairman for the year I973. The following were nominated: Trustee E. Autio, Trustee H.J. Coe and Trustee J. Warwick. Upon balloting, Trustee H.J. Coe was elected as Vice- Chairman for 1973. The minutes of meeting no. held December I6th, adopted. Upon the request of Trustee G. Fairservice, the correspondence was read. It consisted of: a letter from The Royal Canadian Legion, Schreiber Branch I09, expressing their thanks to the participants of the I972 Legion National Literary Contest listing win- ners, and especially to Miss Betty-Ann McKenna of the Schreiber Public School for her excellent Essay. A letter from the Township of Mara- thon advising of the appointment of Councillor T.J. Hughes as Marathon's representative to the Liaison Committeg of The Lake Superior Board of Education A copy of a letter by Jack Stokes, M.P.P. to the Hon. Gordon Carton, Min- ister of Transport and Communications, Toronto urging every precaution poss- ible to be taken to improve driving conditions on the Industrial Road be- tween Hillsport and Manitouwadge over which a school bus travels daily. X4/72 I972 were declared A letter from M. McGuire, Field Worker Zone 2, Ontario Metis and Non Status Indian Association, regarding possible purchase of the Heron Bay School. The Director of Education explained he had been notified by the Improve- ment District of Manitouwadge that an appeal had been made to the courts re- garding the method of election of Trus- tees by separate school supporters to The Lake Superior Board of Education. If upheld, changes will be forthcoming in the election to be held in late I974. Every effort will be made by Mr. Morgan to dispose of the Heron Bay Public School at the best price poss- ible. The Disbursements for the month of December, I972, in the amount of $265,996.12 were approved for payment. A statement of revenue for I972 to December 3I, I972 was presented for information. Certain committees for I973 were formed as follows, the first name being Chairman in each case (except for Trainable Retarded): Budget - Trustees G. Fairservice, R. Acourt, H.J. Coe, F.E. Sechesky, J. Warwick. Liaison with Council - Trustees M. Reid, E. Autio, J. Marcella, R.P. Ungar. Main- tenance - Trustees M. Reid, A. Allen, R. Acourt, J. Warwick. Salary - Trus- tees R.P. Ungar, J. Warwick. R. Weeks. Advisory to Trainable Retarded - Trus- tees A. Allen, M. Dettbarn, M. Reid. The Board approved I973 membership in the following Trustees' Associa- tions: Northern Ontario Public and Secondary School Trustees' Association - $100.00; Affiliation with Ontario School Trustees' Council - $672.00; Ontario Separate School Trustees' Ass- ociation - $40.00. The auditors' interim report dated October 24, I972 was discussed. The Director of Education is to report upon outstanding taxes that appear to be uncollectable, at the February meeting, and to investigate costs of bonding signing authorities for | $50,000. each.
