'B TERRACE BAY NEWS Vol. 15 No. 41 October 12, 1972 15¢ Per Copy HEALTH COUNCILS MAIN TOPIC AT BOARD MEETING The regular meeting of the Board of Health was held Friday, September 15th at 8:00 p.m., in the Marathon Community Centre, Marathon, Ontario. The Chairman of the Board, Mrs. Grace Remus, opened the meeting by thanking the Township of Marathon for inviting the Board to meet there and also expressed her thanks to the audience for attend- ing. The Dental Program, under the supervision of Dr. Richard Kelly, Dental Director, was discussed in some detail. Dr. Kelly advised that approximately 25,000 school children would receive benefits through the program. It was generally agreed that bearing in mind certain budget restrictions the Unit's preventative program was effective. The septic tank inspection program was described by Chief Public Health Inspector, Jack Scott, who also indicated there had been an 80% increase in this year's septic tank applications. Various questions were received from members of the audience. In response to one concerning "Health Councils" Dr. Pickersgill, Medical Officer of Health, recognized that the Health Council should be thinking in terms of the whole District of Thunder Bay but immediately would be established in Thunder Bay until the Council gets firmly settled. Dr. Pickersgill also indicated that Council Regions has not yet been defined and at present even working guidelines were vague. It was suggested that mini- councils or committees could be set up by area health interests. continued page 2 ........ A NEW HOME FOR THE AGED STILL UNDER STUDY The Thunder Bay District Home Board met at Pine- wood Court on September 23, 1972. The Director of Nursing was authorized to attend a three day seminar in December on the Aging Pro- cess. The Administrator was authorized to explore the possibilities of housing arrangements for some of the applicants on the waiting list. This would be for sleeping accommodation only with meals supplied at Pinewood Court. Homes in the vicinity of Binewood Court on James Street would be canvassed. The Vice-Chairman, Fred Harness, Board Member, G. Waghorn and Administrator, M,J. Vibert re- ported on a meeting held in Toronto with the Director Mr. L. Crawford, in regard to the offer of Kimberly Clark of Canada Limited of the Terrace Bay Motor Hotel. Cost and feasibility studies are being carried out and all participating municipalities will be in- formed once these studies have been completed. The Board was given a demonstration of the new lift and bath that has just been installed in Pinewood. Donations of $1000.00 each had been received from the Ladies of the Royal Purple and The Knights of Columbus of Ontario. A feature of the bath is the whirlpool action which many residents with circu- lation difficulties will appreciate. The Blood Transfusion Service of the Canadian Red Cross Society for twenty-five years (1947-1972) has provided every hospital in Canada with all the blood and blood products they need so that "no Canadian need die for want of blood."
