MAY 10, 1972 PAGE 5 SPRING MEETING WELL ATTENDED The Horticultural Society's annual spring meeting held on Thursday, April 27, was very weli attended and most enjoyable. John Steen presided. The minutes of the '71 spring meeting were read by our new secretary, Elaine Mannisto, and adopted as read. Membership sales under the direction of Donna Josus have gone well with over 180 members to date. Irene and John Steen attended the District Meet- ing in Thunder Bay. They benefited from the excham ge of ideas but felt our own Club compared very favorably with other clubs in its overall activities. Some suggestions for consideration in the future were presented by members from the floor. One worthy of special thought was the idea of a tree planting program to replace those already gone and to maintain the present beauty of the community. Mrs. Hilda Hiebert was presented with an Ontario Horticultural Association Service Diploma for her dedicated work over the past many years. Irene Steen showed slides on gardens and flowers in Terrace Bay, illustrating what can be done with a bit of luck, a green thumb and hard work. Several lovely Begonias and Primrose plants as well as seeds were given to the lucky winners of door prizes. Lunch and conversation ended a pleasant evening. PENINSULA RACEWAY NEWS To date there is one hobby stock and four late model cars registered for the 1972 season. One by one the presidents of the liberal associations from each community rose to add their support to the motion ... Carl Hanson of Atikokan, Bill Matson of Dryden, Reeve Cavanaugh of Terrace Bay and so on. It was the highlight of a well attended Thunder Bay Federal Riding Association Nomination Meeting held April 22nd in Red Rock. The motion presented by Gus Champlain of Mara- thon placed the name of Keith Penner before the estimated 200 delegates representing communities from Manitouwadge in the east to Dryden in the west. Then came the motion to close nominations but, Birks Werrett, chairman of the meeting, asked for a few more moments to allow for other nominations. None came, and roar of approval swept the room as Keith Penner was declared the unanimous choice fo repre- sent the Liberal Party in the next federal election. Also attending the meeting from Terrace Bay along with Reeve and Mrs. WE. Cavanaugh were Mr. and Mrs. G. Ramsey, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Baron, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. J. Marcella, Jr. and Mr . Morris Dozois. 2 - 8 P.M.
