TERRACE BAY NEWS I Vol. 15 No. 19 May 10, 1972 15¢ Per Copy LOCAL YOUTHS RECEI VE GRANTS From the thousands of requests that went in to the Opportunities for Youth Program, Terrace Bay was for- tunate in having two appl ications approved. Merits of the various projects submitted were pre- sumably judged on what was best for the greatest number. Jon MacDonald was named Co-ordinator to look after buil ding a Recreation Park on the west side of the River Mout h. This will include a picnic area, boat launching, nature area (hopeful ly a swimming area) and scenic look-outs. This project will require about fifteen boys, ages 17 to 21, and will start approximately the 15th of May and go on till September 2nd. : Three local girls, Gail Simmer, Judy Falzetta and Louise Brooks, applied for and received an Opportun- ity for Youth grant, to work with the local retarded children, in conjunction with a pre-school group of four year olds, who are not elegible for participation in the local Recreation summer program. Their plans include arts and crafts, story time, games, hikes and wading pool activities. It is em- phasized that this project was established for the retarded child, and expanded to include the normal child, in order to give the retarded child the chance to fit into a normal learning situation. More infor- mation regarding registration, etc., will appear at a later date. : Congratulations to both these groups of young people. CANADA HOSPITAL DAY = MAY 12th Friday, May 12th, is Canada Hospital Day. The McCausland Hospital will be drawing attention to the fact by having a display of health and hospital liter- ature available to the general public. Also, Mae Macleod, Director of Nursing, or V. Mazzone, Ad- ministrator, will conduct brief tours of the hospital facility between 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on that day. Canada Hospital Day, which will be observed by more than 1,415 hospitals across the country, has been officially proclaimed by John Munro, Minister of National Health and Welfare, and coincides with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, pioneer of hospital health care. It is sponsored by the Canadian Hospital Association and supported by Provincial Hospital Associations. All this should serve to emphasize something most of us tend to ignore during the rest of the year; that our local hospital is one of our more important local institutions, one that deserves our support and our pride. For many of us it isn't until we get sick that this is brought home to us. But, even then, do we fully appreciate what is involved? A public hospital accomplished its goals through the dedicated efforts of many people. The most obvious are the doctors, nurses and others who work in the hospital . But, many other individual citizens are also involved .... those who serve as hospital trustees and give gener- ously of their time and effort to make the decisions necessary to maintain quality health care in our communities; and those who make contributions in time or money to make the hospital a more pleasant cont'd page 2 .....e..:
