PAGE 22 TERRACE BAY NEWS MARCH 18, 197 i LETTER TO THE EDITOR I have waited until the heat of argument has cooled and having thought over the situation with care, I feel that as a parent, I have a right to express my opinion. I am writing to express my thoughts on what took place at the open meeting held at Terrace Bay, February 20, 1971, on the topic of the amalgametion of the Schreiber and Terrace Bay High Schools, Goethe once said that "The public wishes 1fhe1r to be managed like a woman; one must say nothing to it except what it likes to hear." In this instant my concern is for the minds of our students not the feelings of the public. The youth of a nation are the trustees of posterity. I as e parent desire that my children have the ability and sense of responsibility to accept that trusteeship. I do not wish that they be taught hatred, violence, disrespect for autho«:: rity. My concern is that they be taught self respect, respect for others, respect for the dignity of public office, respect for the experience of those older than themselves. I want my children not merely to know right principles but to love them and practice them. I want my children to learn that the voice of the majority is no proof of Justice. As eo parent I look for the true teacher who defends his students against his own personal influence. It is then with grave concern I view the attitude of a teaching staff who remained gilent after the disrespectful speech made hy a young student against the Director of Education. I view with concern the silence of the parents who did not seek to guide their child into the proper approach to be made in discussion and debate on a controversial issue. I view with concern the loss of opportunity for the teaching of students, the true dignity of a person stating his opinions in a fair minded way. Silence gives consent to an action. This silence leaves no doubt in my mind, that we should as parents, remind our educators that they be alert to the responsibility we parents place in their hands, the responsibility of building walls of peace and understanding in the minds of our children not violence. Whatever the issue, be it right or wrong, the opportunity wes given for free discussion and constructive oriticism. Constructive criticism builds respect for those on either side of the issue. I am for freedom of speech and constructive oriticism but remembering the right of others. I em not for violence or disrespect. I feel as a parent we all owe an apology to our Director of Education for our failure as parents in allowing disrespect and a hint of vio- lence to he shown towards him. The publie, who have freely elected the Board of Educas. tion, who in turn hired a competent Director of Education for guidance and advice in purely educational matters, should continue to have confidence in the board's proposals and decisions. Remember, when the public freely elects a gover- ning body they have-delegated to that board authority to make proposals and decisions. We all know that an ad hoc committee of the board and teachers is looking into the factsg We hope that the members of this committee will express their opinions as they see fit, we hope that the board members of that committee will express their opinion as they too see fit; the right to express this opinion which was given to the board by the public in a free vote. The public should not feel that the board or the Director are less concerned than a few individuals. We have not as yet heard clear cut opinions that the amalgamation is wrong. On March I2, I97I, four Schreiber youths were charged der the provisions of Section 82(3) L.C.A. when liquor wes found by detachment personnel. All of the aforementio liquor was seized from motor vehicles. Investigations conducted by Provincial Constables Duffy and Wills. On March I3, I97I, it snowed lightly and Provincial Constable S.R. Jones was kept busy investigating motor vehicle collisions resulting in $1550.00 in damage. None of the drivers or ooccupents in the vehicles were injured. Motorists are reminded to adjust their driving habits to the changing weather and road conditions. These accidents ended a thirteen day accident free stretch during which the highway had been bare and dry. The first collision occurred five miles east of Terrace Bay when a 1968 Meteor operated by Sister Marine Smith, Manitouwadge, went out of control, spun around and came into contact with the frozen snowbank. A T1970 Hornet owned and operated by Michael Mosychuk, Keswich, Ont, went out of control near Dead Horse Creek, sast of Terrace Bay and came into collision with a guide post. The third and final collision investigated by Constable Jones occurred at Empress Hill and involved David Cozac, Englehart, Ontario when the I967 Pontiac he was operating also went out of control and struck two guide posts. A world of "CAUTION" to ice fisherman and snowmobile enthusiests regarding ice conditions. With the warm weather experienced in the last week and with more to come ... ice conditions on the lakes will be changing daily especial=- ly at inlets end outlets. If travelling on the lakes, stay well away from these areas in particular and be certain of the ice thickness before crossing. Good fishing and with a little fore thought, you can meke I97I a tragedy free year for you end your family.
