JULY 11, 1968 Schreiber Unveiling - Mr. Bromley commended the Dept. of Lands and Forests for its interest, reading several messages from ones unable to attend the occasion, including one from the Hon. James C. Auld, Minister of Tourism and Information. Mr. Bromley said he was doubly appreciative of sharing in this ceremony - in the Sir Collingwood Schreiber plaque, because of his assoc- iation with the C.P.R., and in the Lake Superior Trek, as it is an indication that we are beginning to realize our historical background. Reeve Harness formally thanked all who assisted in making the occasion possible and welcomed the out of town visitors. The Minister of Lands and Forests, after presenting the formal greetings of the Hon. John Robarts, added that the warmth of the hospital- ity he had met in this, his first trip to Schreiber, had made him look forward to another visit. Mr. Denis expressed his pleasure in attending the ceremony. Mr. Schreiber said he was very pleased to be present, but was surprised to find the name pronounced by tome witha hard C. Mr. Bromley replied that both forms are common in town but the harder expression may have been used for clarity over telephones. Mr. Schreiber aiso brought greet- ings from his cousin Tom Schreiber of Islington. Mr. Stokes said, as a native and an employee of the C.P.R., he was happy indeed to see recognition given to the origin of our name, which will provide tourists and visitors with answers to their questions. L.R. McCuaig, a native of Schreiber also, gave a resume' of the town's history, congratulating the council on its choice of a site for the plaque, since it is where the first permanent houses were built by the C.P.R. Though many changes have taken place, the kind of people who live in Schreiber have never, "and | am sure", Mr. McCuaig concluded, "our namesake would be proud of us." Prof. Dawson described the responsibilities of the Archeological and Historical Sites Board of Ontario, with some 12 members and other persons noted for their promotion of the province's historical attract- ions. Others from out of town attending the ceremony included Mrs. Anne Smith, of the Dept. of Archives and History, Toronto; Don Fawcett, District Forester of Kapuskasing; Len Ringham, Regional Director, Lands and Forests, Port Arthur; Ben Lespenskie, Dist. Forester, Pays Plat; and Toi Seppala, Rossport; and Robert Excell, Dept, of Tourism and Information, Toronto. Following the ceremony coffee and lunch TERRACE BAY NEWS were served in the town hall, where the guest reg- ister of the town was signed. ' 4 RECREATION BRIEFS - by David Courtemanche Summer Programme - Activities are well underway at the Swimming Pool and Playground. Registra- tions this year have been very good for both these programmes. The swimming club at the pool seems to be getting quite strong as more people are regis- tering and taking part in the practise sessions. Th They have a very extensive programme coming up in the way of swim meets, the first of which is a proposed swim meet this coming Saturday between Marathon and Terrace Bay at the Terrace Bay pool, with a return visit to Marathon the following Sat- urday. On Saturday, August 3rd, the Terrace Bay Swim Club will travel to Red Rock for the annual North Shore Swim Meet, and the following Satur- day, August 10th, our group will hold their regu- lar Terrace Bay Swim Meet. All persons are wel- come to join this Swim Club; however, there is a stipulation that no one can swim in any meets un- less they attend practises. Our Pool staff are quire competent coaches as they have just attended a Competitive Swimming Clinic which was instructed by the coach of Canada's girls swimming team at the Pan-Am games in Winnipeg last year.
