ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION ZONE 82 ANNUAL REPORT - by Peter A. Laushway Zone 82 of the Royal Canadian Legion had a very active year in 1967. Zone 82 conducts 4 meetings a year when 3 dele- gates from the Marathon, Manitouwadge, Terrace Bay and Schreiber branches attend to discuss business and social events, which bring the branches of the Legion closer together. These meetings are also the center of communication to the Dist- rict, Provincial and Dominion command of the Legion. The branches perform a great many du- ties in their respective communities, which are never publicized. This report is published in order to give the public a better knowledge of the Legion. In June, P.A. Laushway was installed as Zone Commander for a 2 year term. A. Summerall of Manitouwadge was installed as Sports Officer and Marsh Hawes as 2on Zone Publicity Officer. Zone 83 conduct ed their annual Dart Tournament in May, with Marathon winning the trophy. Mare- thon took another trophy in July, when the Branch won the Zone Golf Tournament. In February, Terrace Bay won the Zone Gm Curling Playdowns. The following report from the individual branches shows the work they are doing. Last year, under President Mike Camp- bell, Branch 183 participated in ea spec- jal Citizenship Court, in conjunction with Brotherhood Week. In March, the Branch hosted a Mixed Curling Ronspiel. In April, its members attended an Ecu- menical Service. In May they sponsored the Kiwanis Band and served at a tea and visited Marathon. In November, the New Cenotaph, a definite asset to the comm- unity, was unveiled, and in December a pre-school Christmas party was held. During 1967, the Marathon Branch spon- sored the Boy Scouts and awarded several scholarships or bursaries. The Branch gave financial assistance to two young people enabling them to attend the Peace Gardens in Edmonton. The Branch donated @ special crib to the local hospital and supported many charities and local organ izations, including the Salvation Arny. President for 1968 is Bob Johnston end the secretary is Edith Jordan. Schreiber Branch 109 of the Royal Canadian Legion also had a busy 1967, under the leadership of President Jack Winters. In January they donated $100 to the local transient Fund which is set up to look after needy people who are travelling through. In June, they don- ated their annual Scholarship to a des- erving student. In July, Branch 109 aided other local organizetions in an Old Home Week. On top of this, they con tinually looked after their own Veter- ans who were sick or disabled, with er great care. The President for this Branch for 1968 is again Jack Winters who was re-elected and the secretary is larry Bourke. (Cont'd in next colum) a 4 BUBBLE GUM - OH Ou I JUST CAN'T fest on BUBBLE GUM MARCH 960 Terrace Bay Branch 223 under President Pat Jones, did a lot of travelling last year to various Legion meetings and con- ventions outside of their own Branch. In February they honoured their only Wofld War 1 Veteran by treating him and his wife to dinner. In May they donated mon- ey to help the local Separate School send children to Expo. In June, the Branch participated in a parade leading up to an Inter-Faith Service. In July they hosted a golf tournament. They also purchased | toys for the children's ward in the local hospital, and donated to the Student Coun cil who published a year book. Branch 223 also celebrated the burning of their mortgage, and their building underwent major and minor repairs. Pat Jones was . re-elected to office as President and the secretary is George Churney. Branch 242 in Manitouwadge, under Pres ident Bill Smith, started the year with a bleak financial outlook. Under the guid- ance of their executive, however, they overcame their difficulties. They were aided in this respect by the ladies Auxi- liary, who in November donated $2,000.00 With this help, they were able to pay off some $5,000 of their mortgage. Branch 242 helped to look efter the "Force '67: Drill and Band Team, 130 members strong. They gave a very large picnic and Christ- mas party, with 220 kids in attendance. Along with this they donated to various charitable organizations and clubs, and assisted in many community activities. They also took an active part in Legion gatherings, both Local and out-of-town. The new President for 1968 is Al Summeral and the secretary is Bill Smith. Today, the Royal Canadian Legion is more than active in Track and Field for young people. They are also very inter- ested in education, donating over a milli million dollars in scholarships and bur- saries during the past year. They sponso: many young peoples groups such as Boy Scouts, Cadets, etc. After reading this report, remember and know that your local Legion Branch is doing its share to improve your community If you are an ex-serviceman or a Veteran, why not be a Legionnaire so you can help in this vital task. OF LANDS AND FORESTS The Ontario Dept. of Lands & Forests announces that Angling seasons for 1968 are as follows for this District: Walleye (Yellow Pickere1) May 15th to April 14th with a limit of catch of six (6) in one day. Brook trout (Speckled) January Ist to September 15th with a limi of catch of ten (10) lbs. plus one (1) fish or 15 fish, whichever is the lesser. Pike - No closed season with limit of six (6) in one day. Rainbow trout =~ same as pike with limit 5 Leke trout - same as Rainbow trout Sturgeon - June 15th to Mey W4th with Timit of catch of one (1) each dey.
