By Glen May Chuvalo George Chuvalo, Canadian heavyweight champion, will de- cide within the next two weeks whether or not he will fight again. A severe eye injury in a bout against Joe Frazier result- ed in Chuvalo being stopped for the first time in 67 fights. After surgery and_ rest, George plans to "spar" a few rounds, and if he feels he is physically and mentally pre- pared, he'll return to the square ring. Following are some ques- tions about himself and box- ing. What's wrong with boxing today? "The trouble is that there isn't enough small clubs for fellows to develop. We need more amateurs. Also, the kids today aren't as hungry as they were 20 years ago. "Today education stops boys from being fighters. If I had more education I wouldn't have been a fighter. The kids just aren't hungry anymore." Is boxing crooked? "Boxing is \no dirtier than many other businesses. What is needed is government control with a world-wide central body controlling boxing. The..World Boxing Association isn't any good because there aren't any experienced people on it. Most of them are cooks, librarians, ete. "And I'll tell you, Floyd Pa- terson was the worst heavy- weight champ ever. His mana- ger, Gus D'Amato stopped the good guys from fighting Floyd. You couldn't get a chance to fight him for the title." What about the second Lis- ton-Clay fight at Maine? "Well, I was there and I saw the whole thing. Clay couldn't have hurt me with that punch. It was an easy punch on the side of the face. NORTH SHORE'S SMALLEST SCHOOL EXCELS About 40 exhausted students from Terrace Bay High School returned from Geraldton Saturday, proudly displaying their two trophies won at the Basketball Tournament. The senior Boys Basketball Team just barely lost their games against Geraldton and Nip-Rock teams. They made a brave showing against Schreiber, but found they could-not match their efforts,:. Schreib er received the trophy for the Boy's division. Terrace Bay Senior Girls Basketball team, lead b Lynn Simmer, won every game they played at the tournament, and well deserved the trophy. The cheerleaders also competed for points for the their various routines. -Lead by Mary Clare Coupal, the cheerleaders received 129 out of a total of 150 points calculated by the judges. They were surpris- ed, to say the least, at their win. All in all it was a very exciting and newsworthy weekend for the students of T.B.H.S. I PAGE 11_ SPORTS BEAT e may quit "When I fought Clay I never felt like going down." What about fighters and con- tracts today? "A fighter today should be an Englishman. You get prom- oted over there. In the States it's terrible; you can't make 25 cents. There's too many fighters in the U.S. "It's impossible to manage yourself as you don't have enough time. The best deal for a contract is a 50-50 split with the manager paying every- thing. If you take a contract that gives you two-thirds it's no good 'cause. everything comes off the top first. "There is an element of gangsters in boxing -- there always has been. I've never been approached to do any- thing illegal." - What about George Chuyal- o's future? "I'm still going to fight. I'm 30 years old and have been a professional for 12 years. I am worried about being cut, but after sparring for a couple of weeks, I'll know if I can make it. If not, I'll pack it in." Could anybody have beaten Cassius Clay? 'Nobody now could beat Clay. The only way I could have beaten him was to have been in great condition and been in close -- a bore-in style. 5 "Most guys are afraid of Clay before they fight him. You have to punch Clay in the head if you're going to win." How important is fighting to you? : "To me there's a real thrill in fighting. When you win there is nothing sweeter. "My ego is proding me now, but I'm positive that if I can't improve, I'll quit." Last day to purchase 1968 licence plates is Febru- ary 29th. BEAT THE RUSH AND PURCHASE YOUR 1968 PLATES NOW.
