Vol .2, No.2] REGIONAL CENTENNIAL MEETING HELD HERE Terrace Bay hosted the regional meeting of district Centennial Committee representatives at which the guest speaker was Mr.Paul Harris of the Centennial Planning Council of the Performing Arts. Representatives from Marathon were Del Earle, Dr.McNally, S.Harrison and Mrs.lIrene Ungar; from Manitouwadge were Gerry Prince and Ken Ward. Representing Terrace Bay were Mr.Ed.Cavanaugh and Mrs .C'.Marcella, co-chairmen of the Centennial Committee, Rev. T.G.Husser, Mr.C .Buck of the Men's Chorus, Mrs.O.Chapman for the Curling Clubs, Mrs.D.H.Evans-Smith and Buck Matiowsky, liason officers to the Advisory Committee, Mrs.A. H.Farrow the Horticultural Society, Mrs.J.Beddard the Eastern Star, Mrs.C «Mercier the Legion Auxil- iary, Mrs.J.G.Brooks the CGIT and Mrs.A.McKech nie and Mrs.B.Thorsteinson the Navy League. Mr .Harris explained the Council's purpose was to promote the performing arts in Ontario. He was pleased to announce that plans were finalized last Sunday and it was now the task of the Council to organize and co-ordinate the various companies at their disposal with the following two premises :-- Ist - that performances be given in as many places as possible, particularly those where such performan- ces are rare. 2nd - that costs be reduced as much as possible. Asa result of extensive subsidizing on the part of the provincial government, it was pos- sible for the Council to put forward tentative dates and budgets to the communities who have the facil- ities available. He further explained that each sponsor, whether town, recreation association, company. or industry, or individual, is responsible for the performance costs of which ever company they contract for. Any profits, however, are at the disposal of the sponsor. Each group is responsible for its own transportation and accommodation. A suggestion was put forward by Ken Ward that perhaps a North Shore Fund could be set up to accumulate any profits to be used to offset deficits incurred by any community. In reply Mr. Harris said that it was the Council's desire to ensure that.no one 'went in the hole' over the Festival; expert advice was available and he made several suggestions as to ways of pre-raising funds, i.e. advance ticket sales by subscription. He urged each committee to study their own area, taking into consideration other Centennial projects, conflicting events, over-saturation of the population and any | other factors applicable to their own area. Some of the companies which might appear in this region are: Ontario Variety Show, which would include Catherine McKinnon and the Travellers: continue 4 TERRACE BAY NEWS Serving the District May 26, 1966 CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TO PREPARE MAP New member Steve Kolesar joined other members of the Terrace Bay Chamber of Commerce at a meet- ing held on May 19th. A sincere vote of thanks was made to the commit- tee that organized and conducted the survey on day- light saving time. President Roy Bray informed the meeting that the booklets prepared by the Canadian Chamber of Com- merce had been presented by him to the graduating class at the High School . A report was also given by the president on the meeting held in Beardmore by the Nip-Along Re- gional Information Centre which he attended. A donation of $50 was made by the Chamber to assist the Centre in their building plans. A report is ex- pected from Mrs.D.Rafalant on the meeting of the Upper Lake Superior Tourist Group. Because of the pressure of other business no brief was presented to the Tr ansportation and Communi- cations Committee which met recently in the Lake- head. The meeting of the International Highway Assoc- iation which was held in Terrace Bay was deemed to have been successful although the number of representatives from across the line was not as many as in previous years. Committee reports were given. R.Sinotte report- ed that there are presently twenty-five paid up mem- bers. A report from C.Buck was read concerning the erection of signs on the highway giving the times of services for both churches. No firm decisions have been made although complete co-operation was being received from the Department of Highways. Les Crandlemire said that over 3,000 booklets have been sent out through the Dept.of Tourism, boat and sports shows, information centres, etc., with the intention of creating an interest in this area that, it is hoped, will bear fruit next year and in years to come. A letter from F.A.McDougall of the Department of Lands and Forests contained an apology for th e oversight which resulted in the omission of Terrace Bay from its Game and Fishing Limits map. This will be rectified on future editions. A committee was appointed to go ahead with the preparation of.a map of Terrace Bay and district for distribution to visitors. This map, which Bernie Baeckmann has been commissioned to draw, will show the townsite, golf course, bear pit, points of interest, as well as giving details of store hours and services available.
