Girls Basketball - by Diane Campbell, Grade 11 The Terrace Bay girls basketball team comprised of Jill Crandlemire, Judy McInnes, Diane Camp- bell, Lynn Simmer, Kristine Olsen, Valerie Turner, Susie Sadowick, Margret-Jean Wallwin, Linda Dakin, Gail Dakin, Lita-Marie Boudreau, Claire Belliveau, Linda Hales and Donna Hiebert left on Fri day morning with the boys team and cheerlead- ers to compete in the 1966-67 basketball champion- ship against Schreiber, Nipigon-Red Rock and Geraldton in Geraldton. On a Friday afternoon game against Geraldton, the Geraldton girls were defeated by Terrace Bay 31-13. A dance was held Friday evening in honor of the visiting teams, cheerleaders and coaches, At 8.20 Saturday morning a game was scheduled between Terrace and Schreiber. Victory again was ours for we defeated Schreiber 31-28. The most important game of all was against Nip- Rock on Saturday afternoon. If we won we would receive the trophy, if not, we'd have to play ;off against Geraldton. The girls were all determined to win and we fought right to the end. The game was over and we had defeated Nip-Rock 30-21. The scoring had been evenly divided between the forwards and the guards played a good defensive game. Lynn Simmer received the trophy on behalf of the team. We very proudly returned to Terrace with two of the three trophies. The team would especially like to thank Mr. Ferguson, our coach, who had been very patient with the team during practices and worked hard with us all year to prepare us for our victory in Gerald- ton. Without him we couldn't have done it. The Cheer-leading Competition - by Mary-Ellen Little and Bunny Hayes - cheer leaders At the Basketball Tournament held in Geraldton this past weekend, a Cheerleading competition took place. Competing in this contest were the cheer- leaders from Geraldton, Nip-Rock, Schreib er and Terrace Bay. Each group of cheer-leaders was giv- en a time limit of five minutes in which to put forth their best effort in :giving their personal selection of cheers. The conduct of all cheer-leaders was observed throughout the Friday and Saturday games. The contest was b ased on these five principals: (1) originality (2) general appearance, (3) expres- sion, (4) enthusiasm and (5) sportsmanship. The judges were teachers from the competing schools, one representative from each. No teacher was al- lowed to vote for his own school . After a few minutes, the votes were tallied up and it was nerve wrackingly announced that Schrei- ber and Terrace Bay were tied for first place so both schools were given time for one more cheer. Tense cheer-leaders, with knees knocking, hopefully gave their final cheer. Due to sheer determination and unmistakable moral support from our teams, Terrace Bay won. We, the Terrace Ba y Cheer-Leaders accepted gratefully, with tears in our eyes, the first annual cheer-leading trophy to be awarded. Boys Basketball - by Jim Mikus The T.B.H.S. boy's team put up a determined ef- fort at all times but failed to come out on the winner's end of any of their games. Morale was lowered after losing the first game, a heart-breaking 28-27 to Geraldton. Last year's champs, the Nip-Rock team, was again in top form, and it was only Terrace's de- fense that kept the score down to 25-13 in favour of the Nip-Rock boys. On Saturday our team met Schreiber for the last game. We had played Schreiber several times pre- viously so we knew what to expect. For the fourth time in five games against Schreiber, they beat us by 4 points, this time 35-31. At the end of the day it was Nip-Rock versus Geraldton for the boy's championship with Nip-Rock again coming out on top. One of the stand-outs in all three games was guard Mike Mallais who made sure a win against Terrace was well earned. Top scorers were Bob Robinson, Jim Mikus and Bob Wallwin respectively. The team now awaits the arrival of two teams from the Lakehead this Saturday for a tournament in Schreiber and Terrace Bay. Photo - J.Desrosier An Ice Show will be put on by a number of Schrei- ber's amateur figure-skaters on Saturday, March 5 at 2p.m.~° A silver collection will be taken and all proceeds will go to the Artificial Ice Fund. Free skating will follow. Manuel McCouan of Toronto and Earl McCouan of Windsor are home visiting their parents. Reeve F.V.Harness with J.D. Phillips and Gino Caccamo of the water commission, will attend an H.E.P.C.convention in Toronto this week.
