MacDonald Sos Tpnes Terrace Bay Ont Canada Dear Mr. MacDonald: It is a pleasure for CARE in Korea to report that your generous donation to.the CARE Self Help fond has been used to provide construction materials to the 1,200 landless farm families of the Sam Bong Ri Tideland Reclamation Project. This project is located at levaiiai County, South Chungchong Province, Korea. The Sam Bong Ri Project envolves the saandejetton of two dikes and three reservoirs in order that 3, 000 acres of tide land become productive farm land. Actual work: on the-project started in July of 1963. The first dike (picture below) was completed in January of this year. The flood gates, for which you provided the materials, are now being constructed at both dike sites. The'second dike will be completed and the 3,000 acres will be entirely blocked off from the sea in June or mys of this year. This entire project is being accomplished with the total CARE Srivaisihant of $3.10 per person or $6.20 per acre. All the labor is being provided by the project people. Rails and carts, previously presented by CARE to now self sufficient projects, are being used for the-enormous earth and rock moving task. The provin- cial government has provided tentage and materials for shelters. CARE, using U.S. agricultural surplus commodities, is providing food for these hard working families. After two years of land leveling, and reservoir and canal construction the project will be ready for the first planting. The remainder of your materials will have been used for the flood gates in the reservoirs and the canals. Upon completion of this reclamation work, each family will receive 2-1/2 acres of rice paddy which will provide ample income for self sufficiency and at the same time increase production i in this food-short country. We hope you.are pleased with the fashion in which we have programmed your very generous constibution.
