« September HIGH SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT O.B. Fasan, principal, was chairman for the High School Commencement on Saturday, September 7th, with over 400 attending. Municipal greetings were given by Mrs. L.R. McCuaig councillor, the Valedictory by Cheryl Everitt, and the formal address for the occasion by W.R. Burroughs, €.P.R. Asst. Supt. Mr. Fasan asked for a moment's silence in memory of the late Frank Kalhok, teacher and friend, who, despite failing health, completed the school year. Schreiber's new high school, said Mr. Fasan, represented a classic reversal of the old saying, in that the student. moved, in accommodation, from the ridiculous to the sublime. Introducing the staff, Mr. Fasan said too much credit could not be paid to last year's, since only dedicated teachers could have achieved the high academic standings, and the harmony which prevailed despite the inadequate classroom accommodation . Attendance was over the top again with 97% average daily, and in the academic achievement, 27 students are receiving intermediate certificates for completing grade 10,~ 11 will receive secandary school graduation diplomas for completing grade 12, and the eight writing the required papers for grade 13 are all receiving secondary school honor graduatio diplomas and,as the Hon. George Wardrope commented, it is not easy to pass grade 13 now. In addition, 89% of all grade 13 papers written during last year were passed. Considering the provincial pass average for gr. 13 is around 80%; Schreiber has reason to be proud of it's students. In 1961, financial rewards for academic achieve- ment increased from $310.00 to $735.00 and this year to $6,665.00. It is of utmost satisfaction to the staff to see the increasing recognition of the importance of education by local organizations. Mr. Fasan thanked the school board for their co- operation, and continuing effort to provide the best in accommodation and teaching calibre; the Home and School Association; the local clubs and others for substantial awards; the Student Council which assumes the lead in school activities, and the girls' choir who provide entertainment for many gatherings. Library Science has been added to the subjects offered this year from Grades ? to History to the Grade 13 curriculum making a total of !2 sup} from which the student can choose. In proof of Mr. Fasan's advice to the students, that schooling is now financially rewarding were the following presentations: Sch. Can. Legion Br. 109 - $100 - Top Gr. 12 student, - Cheryl Everitt, Dominion - Provincial Bursary - $100 - Diane Peterson; Lions Club Scholarship - $100 (continued) 12: Sang ecis LIQUOR LAWS APPROVED Approximately 55 percent of those eligible to vote exercised their franchise last Wednesday and gave approval on the following questions: 1.
