Thgs marked, the fish can be recognized by commercial fishermen, fishing club and other anglers who will report such catches to the Fish and Wildlife Division of the Depart- ment of Lands and Forests or the Fisheries Research Board. The clipping was done under the direction of John Budd and Hartley Holm- berg, both on the staff of the Fisheries Research Division. The fish were anaesthet- ized by the use of M.S. 222 (Tricaine Methane Sulfonate), making them docile enough to be easily handled. The clipped lake trout were planted at the west end of Lake Superior in the Pays Platt, Rossport and Terrace Bay areas, They were transported by tractor trailers from the Lakehead, 20,000 fish to the load, and two loads going every two™hours between April 28th and May 5th. This was the second large- scale planting made from the Dorion Hatchery since 1958, when the lake trout rehabilitation programme was initiated on Lake Superior, It is expected that it will be another year or two before definite re- sults of this planting will be determined, Meanwhile, Department officials, commercial fishermen, northern fishing clubs and other interested parties are waiting hopefully in anticipation that it will do a great deal toward restoring the lake trout population of Lake Superior.
