Next month Terrace Bay will be holding its first municipal elections, In a sense it is a sign of the attainment of adulthood in a young community, effect, cuts loose from the protection and patronage of its youthful days and steps fort It is a time when it, in to test its strength as an autcnomous part of | | | the Province and the nation, How will Terr- | ace Bay make out in this rough-and-tunble | battle? Shall we be able to face up to the {| many problems that will confront us and de- mand to be solved through our newly-elected council and boards? The answer, of course, must be, "Yes, we can!" How can you and I, as citizens, help to assure our town's success? What can we do? ' 1. We can take a keen and active interest in the forthcoming elections for local councillors and board-members, We can read what is published by the var- | ious candidates for office, and make an independent decision of whom we would like | to see in office, We can see that a healthy slate of com- petent candidates is nominated on nomina- tion day. June ]0th is THE DAY, i Interest in the nominations and the election ' is becoming very keen, and rightly so, as | the first elected Council is of vital inter- ; est to all residents, { In order to qualify as a candidate a | resident must be nominated by two qualified electors who must appear at the local Munici+ | pal Office between 7 and 8 P.M, on June 10th, An amendment has been made to the Election : Act which provides that an Assessed House- | holder and the wife of an assessed House- 6, -Kiwanis Club holder may stand for office if qualified, Previously the Act stated that the assessed tenant only was eligible. This amendment will apply also to appointment to the High School Board, TERRACE BAY ~ RED ROCK IN 1ST BASEBALL GAME Peanuts, Popcorn, Programmes - "PLAY-BALL" On May 24th, the new entry to the Lakehead ~ Baseball League will swing into Terrace Bay for an afternoon double-header, This game is likely to be a continuation of the rivalry found in our North Shore Hockey League, and all reports are that Red Rock has a very Vol.2, No.20 May 21st, 1959 strong aggregation, Many familiar faces will be seen on their lineup, including ALL the Dunnvilles, Lefty Tretiak, Paul Baxter (Nip- igon) and the two Lesarge Brothers, who were such a great help to Terrace Baseball Super- iors last season. f The opening ceremonies will take place, with Ed. Cavanaugh throwing the first Ball in: the '59 season. We hope his arm is true and his pitch will usher in a successful season for the Terrace Bay team. A beautiful 3-tier cake, specially made | and decorated by Mrs.J.Corbett, who also do- | nated the flowers in the Institute colour | scheme, centered the table. A one-minute silence opened the afternoon session, Reports of district Presidents were | given and extension services for homemakers by Miss E,Irvine who reported in full onthe sessions of the F.W,1.0, Two sets of officers were elected for the newly formed subdivisions, namely North and South Thunder Bay Districts. The F,W.I.0. of the Federated Institutes of Ontario will send greetings to her Majesty | the Queen when she arrives in Canada in June. | The F,W.I,C, are sending an engraved scroll, A turkey dinner was served in St.Andrew!s Church Hall by the evening Auxiliary members, The Queen was toasted by Mrs.Elmore and Mrs, H.McBride sang two solos accompanied by Mrs. J.D.Bryson, Mrs.B.F.Daniels expressed her pleasure at again being in Schreiber and Mrs, Ellmore presented Mrs.R.J,Purcell, former Prov.representative with a corsage. Mrs.A, Manley was presented with a Life Membership in the Thunder Bay District Women's Institutes', As last United President, Mrs.Ellmore was recipient of a gift from the Thunder Bay District, GENITAL RECTOR OF ST.JOHN'S APPOINTED DEAN Rev.R.J.S.Inshaw has been appointed Rural Dean of the Deanery of Superior:
