Page 8! OT YA RTE IRE TNA TTR I -- Sa TERRACE BAY AMATEUR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION NEWS For the Terrace Bay Superiors at least, wae official opening of the 1958-59 hockey season started Monday night. It is pretty hard to make a judgment on the merits of any player who has just donned skates for the first time in the season but from the enthusiasm of the turn-out, Superiors are not going to take a back seat to any of the competitive teams this year, It is also beartening to the players to see so many interested spectators on the side lines. It was good to see Maurice "Nipper" Osmar again teamed up with brother Marv, and Dave Whalen, Maurice around: the net is sure poison and a direct cause of good goal tenders blowing their top. He was sure missed last year during those close games, Then of course we see Don Blom and Jack Lindquist and immediately remem=- ber that Ray Simoneau should be cutting across from the boards and are again reminded that we have lost a player who had gained the enthus- iastic support of his team mates and fans. Others who are missed and. whose places are. going to be hard to fill, are Wally Diduch who was becoming more valuable each year, and Luke Bouchard, who was noted mney for his ability to set up a play. Ray Stachiw was out in his usual form; Terrace Bay likes to consider that Ray is home grown material and-like to point out his terrier like persistence in staying with the puck, He and Doug.Calder are about the best' penalty killers in the league, Another familiar play- er to come up from the Terrace Bay junior ranks is Danny Kenney, We see Steve Smith in uniform first thing this year. He was a little late in getting started last year but this should be a~ big year for Steve. Joe Tookenay, Ran Hansen, Dave Desrosier, Cy Brassard, Rocky Gavin--all | old standbys were in their usual positions. We have to wait a little longer before we can judge whether or not they have softened up or toughened any during the summer. Those new faces you noticed belonged to Don Sear$ wearing a No,l0 jersey. Don is from New Brunswick, The one wearing No.9 jersey, Cor- coran, came down from Manitouwadge to try for the team, Barrie Stephens, an Engineer in the Technical Department, is a product of the Commercial loop in Teronto, He plays defense. Another forward was D,Delandes. In the goal was Easterner Don Dobson, We!ll try and get further data on these newcomers, They should fill in very nicely, . Other new but not unfamiliar players were Ted Wainikka, Ted hag always played against Superiors in the past. He was first with the Schreiber Lions and last year played a good game with the Nipigon Flyers, Another defense. player who has been around Terrace for the past few years i8 Bill Pytyck, Bill started starring young when he won the Most Valuable Player award during his Bantam years, He has steadily improved through the leagues, reaching top quality material in the Junior A Division at the Lakehead, where he played defense for the North Stars for four years. Bill is now 21, carries 162 lbs on a 5! 84" frame, married and now makes his home in Ternace Bay. He is not unfamiliar with the Superiors! type of play having bolstered. them in games against Kapus- kasing and Pt,Arthur, If he continues holding the spot light from the Lakehead to Terrace, Superiors have gained a decided defensive advantage. | Terrace Bay News October 30, 1958 GIRL GUIDE COMMISSIONER VISITS TERRACE "f3rrace Bay was honoured on Friday last, by a visit from the.
