Be OTe = ame a eS 4 Page 3 TOWN TOPICS- CONTINUED SCHREIBER Canadian Legion Field Day Perfect weather blessed the Canadian Legion Field Day on August 4th, with Frank Ginn as Chairman of the day. The festivities be- gan with the parade from the Legion Club led by the Lakehead Girls! Scottish Pipe Band ~> followed by two floats and the throng of exci- ted children, some costumed, some not, but all waving flags and balloons, The one float - entered by the Legion auxiliary and winning first prize, was in the calypso manner, bed- ecked with coloured streamers psuedo palm tree and potted green shrubs. The calpso dancers, « Eileen Lidtea, Maybelle Furlonger, Rita Swanson' and Thelma Olson(unrecognizable in their dark make-up) had maraceas, bongo drum, trays of vivid fruit and baskets of flowers from which they tossed flowers along their way, The second float, a dainty rose garden with trell- is and archway in which Lenére Campbell was posed, won second prize, The judges for the costumes were Miss Ellen BallariMrs, Fred Balork and Mrs, J.D. Bryson, ana their decisions as follows: Dolls prams - Cora Spadoni; Becky Lang. INDUCTION SERVICE FOR REV. RUSSELL CROOK,B.A, The induction service for the Rev. Russell C Crook was held on July 30th, Rev. A. Lavender, D.D., Rev, Harold Alston and Rev. W.S. Cooke, conducting the service, Following the divine service a reception was held in the Church Hall when Dr. Lavender, Andrew Grier, Rev. Cooke, Rev, Alston, Walter Harris, of the Board of Session, and Mrs Frank Fummerton, President of the W.A. all spoke. Mr. Lavender gave a grief summary of Rev. Crook's career before and after deciding upon entering the Ministryoffice worker, contruction worker, ;salesman, even at one time a pick-and-shovelman, saying this varied work | would give him a working understanding with people far beyond any set curriculum studied, Mr. Crook, whose home had been in Letellier, Man, first studied in Toronto, but after six _ months there entered United College in Winnipeg where he graduated this past June. He has spent two years as student minister in St. Charles- Headingly district, near Winnipeg, servi- ng various Churches, With the party attending from the Lakehead were Mrs. A. Neuert, Secretary of Presbytery, and Mrs W, Lahti, both of Fort William, The community offers Rev, Crook and his petite and friendly wife a warm welcome ; with the hope their years in Schreiber may be happy ones. The Baby Contest, with Mrs R.C, Skinner; R.N., Mrs Jack Graham, R.N. and Mrs Jack Rummery, as Judges was won by Miriam Nykanen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Anni Nykangn, and Pamela Nesbitt, daughter of Mr and Mrs Neil Nesbitt- one to six months Ronda Campbell, daughter of Mr & Mrs Russell Campbell and Terry Jartus, son of Mr and Mrs Harry Jartus; in 6 to 12 months, Gail Bottomley, daughter of Mr and Mrs Bottomley and Terry Weaver, daughter of Mrs L.R. Weaver, The freckle face contest had but two entries, Barbara Arnold and Larry Carmiachel so both won: firsts, With the pipe band were Mrs Jean Watts as manager and Mrs H, Holman as escort lady, velina Fraser and Norma Joy Franks gave an : exhibition of the Highland fling with ~~ (continued next column) Mr and Mrs Tom Bourk and Garry, and Mrs. W, Bourk, of Ottawa, Mr and Mrs Warren Sutton and their family of Falconbridge, Mr and Mrs Bill. Mrs Floyd Caldwell and Susan are visiting in Toronto with relatives, Mr and Mrs Bert Morris , and their family, and nephew Billy Russell of Espanola, are camping for two weeks at Amyot, FINAL PREPARATIONS BEING MADE FOR OPEN AIR MASS On Sunday August 10 th the Sixth Annual Open Air Mass sponsored by St. Edward's Council 3554 of the Knights of Columbus will take place in the Schreiber Ball Park which was made available to the Knights again this year through the generosity of the local Kinsmen Club.
