~ ANNUAL HOCKEY. "CLASSIC" IN LOCAL ARENA Palefaces Champs - Undefeated Remember this front page headline that appeared in the March 20th, 1952 issue of the News} LunchPails win S.H. Memorial Trophy Another first page headline taken from the April 7th, 1955 issue of the News] What the headline of the April Ach, 1957 issue of the News will read is any= body's guess, The decision will be reached tomorrow night (Friday, March 29) commencing at 8 otclock in the local arena. At this time the 7th Annual Classic for-the coveted S. H. Memorial Trophy will take place between the - "Palefaces" and the "Lunch Pails", In its first year of competition, February end, 1951 to be exact, this Trophy was won by the "Lunch Pails" as well as in 1955 and 1956, The "Palefaces"! emerged as victors in 1952, 1953 and 1954, Both teams will be out for their "lucky 7" try and their "little Joe" win, The ranks of "Palefaces-Lunch Pails" have proven to be a two fold purpose as far as hockey players are concerned, Last year's Rookie of the "Palefaces", "Sneaky Pete" Harrison reached the pinnacle of his hockey career' in advanc- ing into this past season's roster of the Schreiber Colts of the N.S.H.L, And then by the.same token, this classification has been the "dumping ground" for former "over the hump" intermediate players such as "10%" Marostica and "Sno-Ball" Hanna to name just a couple, When this grudge was first introd- uced to the area, many of the "Palefaces" hadn't been on skates for over ten years, It-has-~been said that the Schreiber Arena (the old battleground) has never been its usual best from the many "pauncho" falls of the "Palefaces", ("D,P." Brady is now a shadow of himself), Though there has been a marked improvement as far as their "spirits are willing", but alas, a further seven years has not made them any younger, ; This reporter is to understand that Waghorn is searching his shelves for pills to bring back youth to his mates whereas Rundle is concocting shots should the pills fail, Tomorrow night will serve as a "Welcome Back Brady", Salary won last summer's ball championship without Brady. For the girls team it means they are the best team in this area having won the Nipigon tournament in addition to the one played here last Saturday, Believe it's safe to say there isn't a girl's team in Northwestern Ontario that could stop the Terrace Bay girls, and if any school wishes '.to dispute that statement, bring them on, The girls won the championship by first shellacking Geraldton 36-10 and then winning the big game by coming from behind, like true champions, to down a stubborn Nipigon team 19-13 e Leading the Terrace Bay attack were Rhea LeClair, with 18 points in the 2 games and Daisy Lehto with 17, The rebounding work of Myrna Crandlemire, Barbara Stevens and Rhea LeClair was outstanding as they grabbed rebound after rebound, Julie Stachiw and Helen Dennis came through with their usual steady games so it is no wonder these girls are champs. Hard work and a tremend- ous amount of desire are the reasons they're the best, and unless Itm wrong they will continue being the best for a long time to come. The boys! victory, unlike the girls', was a distinct surprise, Nobody gave the boys much of a chance of even winning a game let alone the championship, However, on Saturday, led by the shooting and re- bounding of Kit Thomas and Tom Stevens the boys trounced Marathon 31-19, and then upset Nipigon 30-28 for the championship. Since Nipigon won the first tournament played this year, the Nipigon and Terrace Bay boys! teams will play 2 more games and the area champion game total point basis, Terrace Bay's boys played very well with Tom Stevens and Kit Thomas leading the way. Stevens scored a total of 23 points for the day while Thomas flipped in 26, most of them long set shots, While these two boys carried the team offensively, the other players did a bang-up job on defense, The boys certainly are to be commended for their fine effort. They did what nobody gave them a chance to do. All in all it was quite a day for Terrace Bay High School's basketball teams. It's too bad more people.could not have been on hand to watch-our 2 fine teams in action,
