This statement was made by Des Evans-Smith, President of the local club in announcing release of final 1955 activity _ figures from the General Office of Kiwanis International in Chicago. - ; Last year, Kiwanians, 'who channel the greater part of their energy into eight community service 'fields, participated in activities ranging from the purchase of an artificial eye for an underprivileged child to attracting a new industry to a hard-up community. The eight fields are: Agricult- ure and conservation; public and business affairs, support of churches in their spir- itual aims; boys and girls work; Key Clubs; Circle K. Clubs; underprivileged child; and vocational guidance, .. Though fund raising is a minor. part of their operation, they collected i $5,844,371.81 in 1955, which they pankribubed to youth services of various kinds, They raised $4,296,300.60 for hospitals,and hospital facilities; they contributeé $1,508,121.20 to needy churches; and they | distributed $243,046.97 to deserving students through scholarship loans. Always -irtterested in children, eu, provided treatment for 143,854 of them in dental clinics; they assisted Thy 229) de- linquents; and they gave clothing to DA gieeldy youngsters whose parents could not provide me for them, Kiwanis also sponsored 13,406 ' safety patrols; provided recreational (Cont. on next col.) Page 3 * KEWANIS INTERNATIONAL ACTIVE IN 1955 conte a facilities for 790,762 boys and-girls; and sponsored 9,162 biscboll teams -last--year. ~ Under their vocational guidance program, they aided 485,136 youngsters in their search for proper occupations; they aided -' «35,614 more through "Work experience pro- grams t's and--they counseled 38,954 veterans. One of the objects of Kiwanis Inter- national is "to give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather -than to the material values of life," Kiwanians devoted consid- erable effort to their "support of churches in their spiritual aims" program in 1955. They conducted 14,250 "go to church" campaigns they furnished 13,712 lay preachers for needy churches; they sent 73,700 youngsters to religious camps; and they contributed the time of 24,720 of their members to the teach- ing of Sunday school classes, U.S.-Canada Good Will Week took place during the period of April 22nd to April 28th, ¢April *28th was the anniversary of the Signing of the Rush-Bagot Agreement which virtually demilitarized the 3000-mile border between the U.S< "and Canada.)
