If found please return to the Library or phone 344, 0-0-0 FOREST FIRE PROTECTION COURSES TORONTO --- The Ontario Forest Indust- ries Association and the Ontario Depart- ment of Lands and Forests are holding two joint courses in forest fire protection in July, one for the western and one for the eastern part of the Province. Top forest fire protection officials from the woods industries and the Devartment will discuss and demonstrate latest organizational methods and fire fighting techniques aimed at intensifying the co-operation already existing between industry and government personnel for forest safety. These courses and demonstrations, lasting four days, were inaugurated as an experiment in 1953 with the first course at Jellicoe, The unique experiment was expanded to two courses the following year, one (cont. on next col.) Page 11 FOREST FIRE PROTECTION COURSES (cont. ) at the St. Lawrence Corporation's camp at Jellicoe, for the west, and one for eastern and southeastern Ontario at K.V.P. Camp No, 11, about 60 miles north of Webb- wood and 50 miles west of Sudbury. The western course last year was at Martin and Ignace, northwest of Fort William. The exceptional seriousness of the 1955 forest fire situation made it impossible to hold the eastern course, plenned for the Ontario Forest Ranger School near Dorset, The western course this year will be held from July 9 to 12 at the Great Lakes Paper Company, Limited, Martin depot headquarters, The eastern course will follow, July 16 to 19, at the Ontario Forest Range r' Schoo}. All phases of forest fire protection and control are being studied, including prevention, detection, supression and transportation and communications. Lectures by leading authorities in their field, in government and industry, will cover such topics as forest fire regulations and eforecement, fire crews organization and management, fire weather forecasts, fire behaviour and fire fighting tactics. Under- standing and coordination of operation and techniques are aimed at, Classroom explanations will be followed by on-the-spot demonstrations of aerial and ground attach, use of hand tookis and heavy equipment and new aircraft developments in practice, such as aerial water bombing, hose laying, cargo dropping and aerial pumpers, Commissioner E. V. McNeill, head of the Ontario Provincial Police, has appointed two special police officers to work exclusively with the Department of Lands and Forests on forest fire vrotection and investigations this summer, continuing more fully police co-operation which hes existed for some years. One of these officers, Provincial Constable G.A.McMonagle, will address the opening day evening session at both courses on "Investigation and Legal Aspect of Fire Causes," Highlights of both courses, which conclude with demonstrations of aerial and ground fire fighting equipment and activities, using Beaver aircraft and helicopters, include documentary films, e sand box demonstration of a large fire fighting organization, instruction in night travel by compass and papers by specialists, o-0-o
