This report will try to give the reader an idea of the recreational picture in the community of Terrace Bay. Each year our - town is growing in size and with this rapid growth, there is a great need of opportunity for everyone, whether male or female, adult or child, to take part in a programme drawn up to meet their requirements, I, as the Director of Recreation, feel pleased with the over-all picture of the development of our recreation programme, I am very fortunate, of course, in having the assistance offered by our seven-member Rec- reation Committee. Without this Committee, the job would be a great deal harder... Each member has his individual responsibility in the recreation' picture, which gives our Committee a real purpose in our programme, The following are the activities. offered to the people of Terrace Bay in 1955: Physical Social Cultural Hockey Hoe~Down Club Jr.Art Club softball Teen Town Sr.Art Club Baseball Dept. of Education Male Chorus Soccer Films Dept. of Swimming Wilf Carter Show Education Roller Skating Magician Show Concerts Tennis get Library Badminton Punnetry Figure Skating Demonstration Boxing Craft Dis~ Wrestling plays Basketball (Weaving, Volleyball Leather- craft, etc,) Iwill, first of all, give a breakdown of our physical activities in their order of popularity: HOCKEY This, during the past winter season, was the big activity. It was controlled by an executive that took charge of intermediate hockey, house league, hockey and minor hockey. (Cont. on next col,) Page 9 5 RECREATION FLYER (Cont. ) as The intermediate team is the sentor-team- "' in town, which is entered in the Thunder - Bay Hockey Association and came up in the semi-playoffs last year. The house league had a very good year, having five teams which took in all shift men in the Mill, 'This -provided-a good recreational activity for some 75 men, The minor league had a juvenile team, a midget, bantam, peewee and a flyweight team. In this class there.were over 100 boys participating. These teams are winning recognition for. our town in the coming years, ' We also had two ladies teams which played a few exhibition games, drawing a great deal of spectator interest. The women were given ice time for practices and enjoyed showing the mele - sex that they are capable of looking like top pros. BALL 1. Softball - When summer rolls around, and hardly before the snow is completely _ out of the bush, the topic' of ball is dis- cussed. We give a lot of people in town the opportunity to see our men in shift teams play a good type of 'ball. I believe the total spectator statistics show 4000 people coming out. to see these four teams competing one against the other in a close series, Although occasionally tempers flare here and there, it is forgotten and the games go on three nights a. week, Again, the ladies did not sit back and watch the men take over, They too got into action and played a five-game series with our neighbouring town of Schreiber, to emerge the winners, OE WS eye <. Baseball - It was rather regrettable ' last year to see the disinterest displayed in haseball, With the strongly scheduled softball, there were just not enough days ' in the week for men to participate, We have only the one ball field and it is tightly scheduled for practices and games, We hope this year that baseball will give a good showing, 3. Minor Baseball - Last season we went through a poor year for the kids! ball, The summer got underway so rapidly that" the children were late in starting any ball, and our season was far from good, We did manage, however, to start to develop a Little League ballfield, and . which we hope will really be of help for the coming season, (To Be Continued - This report on Recreation will be carried in several issues of the Terrace Bay News.)
