AROUND THE TOWN The community gathered en masse last Friday. evening, June 19th, to bid. farewell to Elsa and Clarence Smith, who as teacher of Grade one pupils and Principal, respecti- vely; have laboured through six years of steady growth in 'Terrace Bay, commencing with a mere handful of ehildren, until today it is more than the Public School could hold. The party, under the- auspices of the Home and School Association, was held in the High Sehool Auditorium and Gordon Rowlandson acted: as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Modern and Square Dancing was en- joyed by the group with music supplied by Don Anderson and his boys and Len Crockford doing the calling. The Grand March was led Ke the Smiths following which, Gordon ntroduced Mr, "dit Cavanaugh . Ed thanked ee beth, on behalf of all the parents and their many many friends, for the magnificient job they had done with our children, a -- great deal of which had: been above and be- yond the call of their profession. Ed then presented Elsa and Clarence with a very beautiful silver service, Clarence thanked everyone and was joined by a few words from Elsa Smith, Further dancing was enjoyed and a. luncheon served by Mrs, Marge Lundberg, Convenor, and her group of assistants, Pro- gramme convenor was Mrs, Verne Hopper. Mr, and Mrs, Bill Palmer cf Saginaw, Michigan, were the guests of Bill's cousin, Bill Borsum, and femily least week, Mrs. W. Baillie and Miss A. Baillie of Port Arthur, visited with Mr. and Mrs. Mason Dixon last wookend, "Mr. and Mrs. Fred McMillan < are spending the week in Duluth, Minnesota,' Mrs, Ted Brown entertained on Sunday afternoon, June 2lst, at a birthday party for her daughter Joannets fourth birthday, Games ond contests were played outdoors, after which a lovely luncheon was served to the six young guests, Mrs, Bill Borsum entertained in honour of her daughter Beth's sixth birthday Wednes--- day afternoon, Jane 2th when with ten guests a variety of gotwes were played and a birth- day luncheon coeluding the afternoon, Mrs. Malcolm Craig held a birthday party for her youngest son, Campbell's third birthday on Wednesday afternoon, June 24th . 8 little guests were present and enjoyed some outdoor games and a garden party. Millie Borsum leaves Thursday with Bobby and Bethie to visit with her parents, Mr, and Mrs, Werner Bengs and Bill's Mother and sister, Mrs,' E. A. Borsum and Delores 'at Dollar Bay, Michigan for the coming three weeks, Arriving Tuesday morning Mr. and Mrs, E. J. Burkitt and son Craig of Kapuskasing, Ontario are visiting with the Mac Crdigs before travelling on to Morden, Manitoba. Mr, and Mrs, A. P. Cumming of Sarnia, Ontario will return home July first follow- ing a month's visit with son Jimmy Cumming and family, Mr, A. H. Brown of the National Geographic Society, Washington, D.C. is spending a few days in Terrace Bay in connection with the survey he is doing on Ontario, Ellen and Stan Hodgekiss along with Gordie Rowlandson motored to Toronto a week ag where Hllen will visit a while. Stan and Gordie returned the following Sunday, With summer vacation with us again the principals and teachers will wanes sar afield before returning for another season in September. Elsa and Clarence Gmith will leave on Friday to take up residence in Fort Willian, with Clarence taking the principalship of 'Francis Street School, in the fall, and Elsa teaching in Crawford Street School, During their vacation however, they will again attend summer courses at London and Toronto, Ontario. Mr, and Mrs, Ray Kenney and family will return "home" to Rossport for their vacation, Mr, ond Mrs, Dave Locking also have their own special retreat near Kenora, Ontario and will leave this weekend, Dorothy McEwan will vacation with her parents, Mr, and Mrs, Robert McEwan in. Kingston,' Ontario before returning in the fall, ; Clare Quarry will attend a summer course in Hamilton, Ontario and also visit with her parents, Mr, and Mrs, Jemes Quarrey in Burlington, Ontario. Lois Windle and Pat Dooling will leave next Tyesday by boat from the Lakehead for Port' McNichol, From there they will motor through Algonquin Park and home to Mr, and Mrs, Joe Dooling at Douglas, Ontario for Pat and to Renfrew, Ohtario to visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs, John Windle for Lois. Pat will return to continue teaching at the Separate School this fall, while (cont, on page 5)
