HAVE A MERRY CHRISTHHAS Christmas is the most joyful time of the year. Don't turn it into a tragedy. Christmas fires occur because the extra hazards - highly flammable Christmas trees and decorations - are brought into our homes and public buildings. There are also other hazards, which include use of lighted candles and defective clectric lights. A little knowledge of these hazards, and how to prevent tragic fires, will help kcep Christmas the merry holiday it should be in all Canadian homes including those at Terrace Bay. Batty. ln Few people realize that the ordinary Christmas tree is one of the most flammable objects known, It is filled with pitch and resin. Once ignited, a Christmas tree is very difficult to extinguish. An average size tree tekes less than two minutes to burn up. Such a tree can casily start a roaring blaze in your house before the Firc Department could arrive, Many methods of "flame-proofing" Christmas trocs have becn tested, but fow have proved successful. If decorations arc used about the house, do not permit them to be around lights or near places where people may smoke, It is preferable to keep them up near the cciling or well above the heads of anyone walking in the room, Fire has taken the leading toll of children who have been killed cach year, of those who are under five years of age. Annually the Fire Departments in the U. S, A. and Canada report loss of life to children. Nearly all of _ these deaths are the result of some adult carelessness and irresponsibility. Parents should be careful to provide toys that are safe. Chemical sets requiring alcohol, kerosene or gasoline are dangerous. Parents should supervise children playing with olectrical toys. A little knowledge of the hazards will help to keep Christmas the merry and joyful time it should be, Again let's ring Christmas bells, not fire bells this Christmas. George C.
