May 2&7, 1948 eens i ee ee oe JACK ENSTROM DROWNED Terrace Bay was shocked last week-end to learn of the drowning of Jack Enstrom on Friday night in Lake Superior at the mouth of the Aguasabon River. In company with Ab Keehn and Joe Campbell, Jack was fishing from the small island about a hundred yards from shore when the boat in which the three had reached the island began to drift. A strong swimmer, Jack disrobed and plunged into the lake hoping to reach the drifting boat, but a combination of current and cold water proved too much for him. Ab Keehn and Joe Campbell who were powerless to help, hailed a party on shore who notified Corporal Bonnycastle of the Ontario Provincial Police. Ab and Joe were later picked up by boat from the island but as darkness had set in, dragging operations were delayed until Saturday morning when the body was recovered. The funeral was held Tuesday in Port Arthur. Jack Enstrom was 23 years of age. His parents reside at Port Arthur. He had been employed at Terrace Bay since August 1946 as an engineer's helper and being very popular with his fellow workmen had made many good friends. Jack's untimely death is a distinct loss to the community of Terrace Bay. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his parents and relatives, and all 'who are left to mourn his passing. 0-0-0 LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF ONTARIO , TO LAY CCRNERSTONE JUNE 8TH Tuesday June 8th will be a memorable day at Terrace Bay, for it will mark the laying of the cornerstone at the Millsite by His Honour, Lieutenant Governor Ray Lawson, 0.B.E., who will be accompanied by Mrs. Lawson, As we go to press, detailed plans for the event are being worked out and will be reported in the next issue of this paper. 0-0-0 POLITICAL CAMPAIGN AT TERRACE BAY IN HIGH GEAR Last Monday evening at the Recreation Hall, the political campaign being con- ducted at Terrace Bay by candidates for the June 7th Provincial Election moved into high gear with a Liberal Party Rally. This particular political gathering marked another "first" at Terrace Bay. Principal speakers at the meeting were the candidate H. H. "Bert" Styffe of Port Arthur and Leo Gauthier, Federal Member of Parliament for Sudbury. Mr. Gauthisr made the 800 mile round trip from Sudbury solely to speak at the meeting in French and English in support of Mr. Styffe, who was accompanied by Mrs. Styffe and members of Lake- head Liberal organizations. At the close of the meeting, attended by a capacity crowd which neared the 500 mark, Mr. Styffe expressed his pleasure at the response of the audience and frankly stated that "it was one of the best meetings I have had in two campaigns for office", Following the meeting those in attendance saw the technicolour film "Can't Help Singing" as guests of the Liberal Association. On Thursday evening, Mey 27th at 7:45 p.m. the Progressive Conservative Candidate, George Wardrope, will address a meeting. 'The final meeting scheduled to date will be held on Wednesday, June end, at 8:30 p.m. when F. QO. Robinson C.C.F. candidate will address a meeting.
