'aati WHO'S WHO AROUND THE JOB FRED J. CARPENTER, NORTH AMERICAN BUILDINGS! MANAGER AT TERRACE BAY. Our who's who this week is Fred J. Carpenter, Manager of the Terraee Bay Branch of the Winni- peg firm, North American Buildings Limited. Before we take a leok at Fred, let's talk for a moment about North American Buildings. Baek in '41, North American Lumber Company of Winnipeg, started to prefabricate houses and by '44 business had been expanded to a point where it was necessary to organize the subsidiary -- North Ameriean Buildings Ltd. Since entering the prefabricated hous business, North American has handled a number of big jobs, including a 100 unit program for Manitoba Sugar Beet Company, units for Pine Falls, Department of Transport, Veterans Land det in the greater Winnipeg area and other parts of Mani- toba, as well as bunkhouses for C.P,.R. Throughout their expansion, every effort has been made to engineer and build better houses faster and more eeonomically. Fred Carpenter was born and edueated in Winnipeg where he graduated in aeeounting in 1929. In 1940, Fred jeined the forces of North American where he worked for a time in sales and cost accounting. As business expanded, Fred took on responsibilities in produetion organizing on pre- fab units and when North American decided to establish a Terrace Bay braneh to build houses for our project, Fred Carpenter was the man delegated to manage the job. He arrived here July 15th, 1946. - Since that date, under Fred's able guidance, a complete house prefabricating plant has been established at Terrace Bay, capable of turning out five houses per week. This plant utilizes modern machinery and production line methods, mueh the same as those by which many commodities are processed, Contrary to popular opinion prefabricated houses need not necessarily contain less material than a custom built house as is evidenced by the 89 houses which have been erected to date by N.A.B. at Terrace Bay, Variety in design and appearance can also be accomplished and we need only look down one of our townsite streets to realize that point. Among his hobbies, Fred Carpenter lists duck shooting and golf, although latest rumours have it that fishing will soon become a phase of his off-time activities. Fred was married in 1940 to Doreen Marion Burns and the Carpenters have a son, Bryan, age 6. All are Terrace Bay residents. There must be a real measure of satisfaction for Fred Carpenter as house after house is erect- ed at Terrace Bay by North American Buildings, whose methods in the field of prefabricated houses are a tribute to the organizing and engineering ability of that organizaticn. -o00-
