Description
The First Presbyterian Church was opened for services in 1881 as a replacement for an earlier frame church on the same property. The manse is older, constructed in 1857-1858 for the first Presbyterian minister for this congregation, William Caven. This lovely limestone residence with its full veranda, was considered prohibitive to repair in 1928 and replaced by the current red brick manse. Some of the originalinterior trim was retained in the brick replacement building.

This rare photograph, taken approximately 20 years after the church was built, shows the two buildings in context, complemented by the stone retaining wall that extended at that time around three sides of the church property.
Notes
Condition: Fragile. This image shows signs of age: it is stained, the sepia darkened to yellows and browns as it loses its contrast. It contains important information about these buildings and should be handled with great care.
