- Description
- Photo of the First Presbyterian Church located at 147 Widder Street East. This is how it appeared in 1981. Since then it has undergone some renovations including an addition to the Church to make more room for the very popular Sunday school.
Was built in 1879-80 for the Presbyterians, using money from parishioners as well as labour from parishioners so that they might have a building worth worshiping in.
Was one of two Presbyterian church, as they had divided and by 1878 there were the First Presbyterians and the Knox Presbyterians.
Some famous Presbyterians were: Agnus Knox (elocutionist and professor at Boston Unversity) and Arthur Meighen (Prime Minister, Conservative leader).
On November 20, 1988 just before 3pm the massive stone chimney crashed through the roof then through the auditorium finally landing on the floor of the basement/Sunday school hall causing the whole town to get involved in fixing the church. - Notes
