I wonder whether the number on the rock is a photographer's identification mark rather than a date. I have two CDV's, both photographs of young men, in which the studio props are almost identical to that of your photograph. In one the number on the rock is 1733 and on the second the number is 1735. In each case the photographer is J. L Wilson and the location is St. Marys C.W. which suggests that they were taken prior to 1867.
