Description
A photograph of an unidentified man's cubicle at the British Mortgage & Trust Company, a business that was once located at 131 Queen Street East. The man is sitting at the desk looking toward the camera. The company was eventually acquired by Victoria & Grey Co in 1964.

The first building on this site was built in 1859, known as the Empire Hotel. In 1881, this building was demolished, so in 1882, Robert Box constructed a new building on the site. This building served many purposes, including a clothing store, the White and May Company, around 1910. In 1963, this second building was demolished. That same year, Rounthwaite and Associates of Toronto constructed a new building for the then owners, Victoria & Grey Trust Co.

The British Mortgage & Trust Company was established in 1877 and acquired by the Victoria & Grey Trust Company in 1964. In 1984, the National Trust Company acquired Victoria & Grey Trust Company and subsequently in 1997, National Trust Company was acquired by Scotiabank. Scotiabank has been at 131 Queen Street East ever since.
