- Description
- This is an image of the beet sugar factory in Berlin. The city of Berlin underwent a name change in 1916, becoming Kitchener.
In 1901, the Ontario Sugar Company decided to build a beet sugar factory in Berlin, with the first product being produced in 1902. This plant was partly-transported and partly-new, with the factory's steel-framework and machinery coming from a failed plant in Michigan. The 600-ton-capacity factory was more than one-third of a mile long and contained a main factory in addition to a sugar storage hall, seed sheds, beet storage sheds, a processing area, and a cooperage. Farmers from Waterloo County and Southern Ontario supplied beets to the factory which had a Grand Trunk Trail Railway spur from the mainline in Berlin. Unfortunately the business didn't last long as the company was no longer by 1909. Dominion Sugar, a Wallaceburg refinery, purchased the factory and were able to keep some local sugar production going. The local sugar beet industry lasted until 1923 when all the equipment was removed from the factory.
