- Description
- This is an image of Lind Park, looking south towards Jones St. from the northern side of the park. Lind Park is located on the corner of Church and Jones Streets. The park is now home to a bronze statue of locally-born Prime Minister Arthur Meighen. Commissioned by the federal government to sculptor Marcel Braitstein in 1970, it sat in an Ottawa warehouse until it was relocated to St. Marys in 1987 where it was installed in 1988.
Lind Park is named after John G. Lind, who was one of the founders of St. Marys Cement back in 1912. He purchased the derelict property that would become the park close to his family home in the early 1930s and set out to rehabilitate it. He hired a professional landscape architect to plan the grounds and used laborours from the Cement Plant to do the heavy work, including building stone walls. This provided paid work opportunities for his employees during the peak of the Great Depression while also creating a beautiful park. In 1942, he transferred the park to the municipality. John Lind contributed greatly to St. Marys and had a large commitment to public parks and recreation. This is evident as he also (along with the newly formed Rotary Club of St. Marys) donated Cadzow Park and the Tracy house (now the St. Marys Museum) to the town in 1926 and had Cadzow Pool put in which was still in use over 80 years later, in addition to creating a parks committee, among other things. John G. Lind’s descendants continue to support parks and recreation in St. Marys with generous donations to the development of the Quarry, the tennis courts, the Sportsplex and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. - Date of Publication
