- Description
- This is a photograph of the old shaving parlor and tobacco store that used to be located in the old Grand Central Hotel building at 150-152 Queen Street East.
The Grand Central Hotel building was built around 1850 for T.B. Guest, a prominent businessman in early St. Marys. The building became the "Oxford House" in 1874, and was renamed to the "Grand Central Hotel" in 1886. It remained a hotel until 1917 when the sale of alcohol was prohibited in Ontario and the owner, George Norris, started to rent the downstairs out to businesses and the upstairs to tenants.
This photograph would likely have been taken shortly after Edgar Fern Marshall, a barber who also dealt tobacco, started renting part of the building from Norris. If you look very closely, you can almost make out "Marshall" reflected off of a sign in the window. - Notes
