- Description
- This is a photo of one of the old limestone quarries in St. Marys. You can see some buildings and machinery that were used.
Quarrying was a major industry in early St. Marys history, but in 1920 the quarries closed because there was no longer a demand for stone. By 1930, all machinery had been removed from the quarries and they were allowed to fill with water, immediately making the quarry a popular place for swimming. However, it wasn't until 1945 that the Town purchased the property and opened the east quarry as a public swimming pool. The Quarry has been a popular place for locals to swim ever since. - Notes
