Description

This photograph shows the house located at 252 Queen Street East as it appeared in the early to mid-1980s. The cottage, seen to the right, was built c. 1849 for John Sanderson. Sanderson was a lumberman who would later have the two-storey addition added to the cottage c. 1869 after marrying and expanding his family. The cottage was built of St. Marys limestone and the stonework of the two-storey portion of the house has been attributed to stonemason James Elliott; Elliott was responsible for the work on the Opera House.

The house would later become known as the residence of the Eedy family. The Eedys were the publishers of the local newspaper the Journal, which would eventually amalgamate with the Argus to become the Journal-Argus. Four generations of the Eedy family have lived in the house. The house features ornamental sandstone above the windows. Both the cottage and the two-storey sections of the home have well-preserved verandahs. The two-storey addition has an enclosed entrance with tall rounded windows and an elaborate cornice. The verandah on the cottage features fancy treillage work and a large central dormer with arched windows. This house has been historically designated.

In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
