Description
This image shows the house at 156 Queen Street West in the mid-1980s. The house was built c. 1880 and is still standing today. Numerous St. Marys residents have lived in the home since it was built including Daniel S. Rupert, a local dentist and politician, and the Harris family among many others.

This house is a grand example of the yellow-brick structures often built in the mid to late 19th century. The building features two bay windows, both seen at the front and side of the home. Decorative brackets sit under the roof eaves. A large verandah and balcony are attached the front of the house, with the corner wrapping around the house in rotunda fashion. The support columns are tall and thin. This balcony was removed sometime after this photo; however, it has since been restored to the structure. A reconstruction project for the retaining wall surrounding the property took place in April of 2001.

In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
