- Description
- This image is one in a series of postcards from the Reg Near collection. This was the third Knox Presbyterian Church, looking southwest from Church Street South. The first church, built in 1897, burned down in 1891. Rebuilt at a cost of $15 000, the second church was also lost to a fire in 1905. The decision was made to rebuild on the same spot, and the building pictured was finished in the fall of 1905 at the cost of $17 000. With seating for 750 people and a large lecture room in the basement, this church served until the 1950s, when the shrinking congregation merged with the First Presbyterian Church in the North Ward. After being sold in 1969, it was subsequently demolished. The site, 66 Church Street South, now hosts an apartment building, opened in 1980.
This postcard is used and dated September 29, 1910. - Notes
