- Description
- This grand white brick house was built in 1857. The house contains many Neo-Classical elements including the geometric surround detailing over the front door transom window and the commanding symmetrical façade. The house was originally constructed with light salmon-coloured brick, which was painted white c. 1926. This home has been historically designated.
The house was built for David Smith and was one of the earliest brick homes in St. Marys. It has been home to several notable local residents over the years. John Robinson, a civil engineer known for his design of the Grand Trunk viaduct, was an owner of the home for many years. Robert D. Eaton, the elder brother of the well-known merchant Timothy Eaton, lived in the house from 1880 to 1885. James D. Moore, a local produce dealer, was also a resident. The house eventually became known as the Maxwell Home; Harold Maxwell and his wife Frances purchased the house in 1932. The Maxwell family lived in the house until 1985.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
