Description
This image is one in a series of postcards from the Reg Near collection. Thomas Ingersoll first established a grist mill in St. Marys on the banks of the Thames River in 1843 and milling continued on that site for 130 years. The original Ingersoll mill was taken over and enlarged by William V. Hutton. When he retired, the mill was sold to George Carter, whose success as a mill owner overwhelmed competition from other mills along the Thames River near the town. Members of the Carter family continued to run the St. Marys Milling Company until the 1920s, when it was sold to the Wolverton Mill Co. This photo shows a cleanup taking place after a fire at the mill.
