- This photograph was taken in the early 1980s and shows the house located at 169 Ingersoll Street. The house was built in the mid-1870s for Patrick Whelihan, who ran a farm on the surrounding land. Whelihan also worked as a merchant for several years. In 1871 he was given the position of registrar for the south riding of the County of Perth. He held the position until 1903. Much later, the house would be known as the residence of the Ruthig family.
This large brick house overlooks the Thames River in the northwest corner of St. Marys. A tall arched door sits in the central dormer. The door contains details reminiscent of the tracery commonly seen in church windows. The door leads out to a small balcony. The front of the house has an enclosed porch with prominent white columns, a Greco-Revival stylistic element.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
