Description
This house, once located on the Thames River off of Emily Street, was built for local politician T.B. Guest. The house was demolished in the 1980s, shortly after this photograph was taken. Guest was elected the first Mayor of St. Marys in 1864. This large brick home was built for he and his family in 1873. In later years the house came to be known as the residence of the Gilpin family.

The house featured many stylistic elements popular in the mid 19th century. The house had two-storey bay windows with ornate brackets under the roof eaves. The windows were tall and arched. The porches on the house included Greco-inspired columns with Gothic-Revival brackets. The brackets had a cut-out design that is often seen on the tracery in church windows. The roof peaks were adorned with painted, ornate bargeboard.

In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
