- Description
- This photo shows the house located at 46 Church Street South. The house was built by William Lyle Hutton circa 1873. Hutton was born in 1826 in the Niagara District and later became a successful businessman in St. Mary, owning a general store in town around 1862. In 1873, the Bank of Montreal purchased the house from Hutton. A number of bank managers and their families lived in the house after Hutton including Robert Hillyard, John Leslie, J.W.G. Watson, D.T. Neil, and A.G. Loughrey. In 1934, Dr. Thomas John McInnis purchased the home from the Bank of Montreal. He and his family lived in the south residential portion while he used the old bank addition for his medical practice. In 1967, Dr. McInnis moved to Toronto with his family.
This large light brick house has several features typical to the mid to late 19th century such as the double brackets, the arched brick headers over the windows and the pediment decoration over the door to the right. Other notable features on the home include a bay window on the lower level and the ornate covered front entryway.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
