- Description
- This house located at 186 Salina St. S. in the 1980s (the address is now Westover Street) has been the residence of several notable St. Marys residents throughout history. The house is a Regency style cottage built of limestone in the 1850s. The house was built by Joseph Osmond Hutton, a local mill owner and the builder of Westover Park. Edward Taylor Dartnell was the subsequent owner; Dartnell worked as a lawyer and was known for his Upper Canadian landscape paintings. Beginning in the 1860s and 50 years onward, the grounds of Ardmore Park, also locally known as the Hutton House, were used for Sunday School picnics, fundraising garden parties and other service club activities.
Other notable residents included local merchant John Walsh and Lex Wilson. Wilson was a well-known steeplechaser in the 1930s. Helen Mills Wilson, wife of Lex Wilson, was also an owner of the home. Helen was the first woman to serve on the St. Marys Town Council in 1948 and later would be elected as St. Marys's first female mayor in 1962.
This photo provides a view of this limestone home's French windows with their original frames and shutters. Note the details in the wood on the peak of the small central tower. Elegant brackets can also be seen under the roof eaves. The image shows the grounds as they were at this time. Many plants and tree surrounded the building. A stone walkway leads up to the house and a small pond and fountain can be seen in the bottom left corner of the image.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
